New tiger cubs on display from tomorrow
Dreamworld's pair of new two week old Sumatran tiger cubs will be on display to the public from Tuesday in their purpose-built nursery.
The two cubs, born to Dreamworld's pair of Sumatran tigers, a critically endangered tiger sub-species, will get their first glimpse of the outside world when they're moved to their purpose-built nursery, part of Tiger Island at Dreamworld.
After spending the next few weeks in quarantine - behind glass windows for onlooking park guests - they will be taken for periodic walks around the park to get the cubs used to human interaction. Such walks are expected to commence in May.
The cubs will be reared by hand to ensure they are able to be safely handled by their human keepers, crucial interaction to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the tigers in the task to boost numbers and maintain genetic diversity of the sub-species that is facing extinction from habitat loss and hunting in their native Sumatra, an island in Indonesia.
Less than 400 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, with another hundred or so in zoos around the world as part of a programme to ensure the future of the sub-species.
It is expected that in the long-term these two new cubs will be sent to other zoos as part of the programme.
