  6. Are steam trains the same as kettles at home? And if so have Dreamworld heard the saying 'A watched pot never boils', and considered not having someone supervise the process to make it go quicker? Just thinking out loud here.

  7. I'm going to keep my list Australian. Favourites 1) Superman - it's the country's best coaster. No contest. 2) Abyss - The best bang for buck coaster style out there. 3) Tower of Terror - The original and the best. When it first opened it was something else. Lap-bars, full speed, full height. 4) Jet Rescue - Out of control, simple, exciting. Who-ever designated is as a family coaster is a crazy man, and I love them. Bottom of the barrel 1) Motocoaster - Sorry Dreamworld, but it's true. Call it a sign of management at the time, the fact that it could've been a Vekoma Motorbike Coaster and swapped at the last minute for something Intamin somehow turned into a huge mistake. Terrible station design, terrible placement in the park and a bland ride experience. The park would be better off selling it (not hard given the way it was constructed) and turning back into vintage cars. I'm genuinely not one of these overly nostalgic people, change is good, but they destroyed a generational icon in the park and replaced it with something that further ruined another area of the park that was Disney-esque and I really do believe the ride is just so bad that very few guests if any would mourn its loss. Let me put it to you this way, the vintage cars had charm because you could drive it around rides, over bridges, through tunnels etc. all the things the current iteration doesn't have and so if you surveyed guests "would you rather a) Vintage cars back where they were and Mine Ride to open but kill Motocoaster or B ) keep things exactly as they are?" I guarantee most guests would vote the former.

  8. The little Fowler 0-4-0T worked at Rocky Point sugar mill and when laid aside in the 1950s went for a short time at the Pleasure Island fun park near the Water Ski Gardens on the Nerang River. That venture did not last long and the loco went to Gilltrap's Auto Museum. Later it went on display at Dreamworld and was partially dismantled to ascertain its condition and suitability to be restored and added to Dreamworld's roster. With the decision not to go ahead the engine was returned to Rocky Point where it underwent a cosmetic restoration. The engine has since been placed on display at the Beenleigh Historic Village, where, in the open, it is showing the effects of the weather. It is a beautiful looking little machine and would have looked great hauling Dreamworld's train. If only .....

  10. I wouldn't be surprised if they never had plans to use the old shades. It may of just been that they had to rush something out because of a delay in the construction or materials being supplied.

  11. No, JakeV8, this photo was taken before park opening hours several years ago. The Perry had had some maintenance done, and to check that it was fit for work, was given one trip around the circuit with the train, including the dead Baldwin loco to add a bit of weight. A special stop was made approaching Rocky Hollow for a photograph of this unique occasion. Only one trip was made, then back to the shed and the Baldwin was detached, to allow the Perry to run for the day.. Note, that if the Baldwin had indeed failed, it would be rescued by the Simplex loco, instead of waiting two hours to prepare the Perry. Could you please explain why it would take longer? I know of no obstacle.

  12. I'm sure there are some people on here who have been inside the train maintenance shed. Would take a guess and say it would be similar to any normal workshop as far as setup goes. Only real difference is trains (now train and tractor ) instead of cars or trucks.

  13. Found a pretty cool & rare photo off the Perry doing a double-header with the Baldwin back a few years ago, or it looks like that the Baldwin might have broken down and is getting a tow back in to the workshop/maintenance sheds. Also a bit curious if anyone here has by any chance ever been inside the maintenance sheds and ever gotten any photos of the set up they have running in there?

  15. I don't actually mind Robb's commentary. If I want something without commentary I head over to CF, but if I want a change to a POV I head over to TPR, just for a nice change.

  17. This is exactly what Australia needs. A massive lift hill, long ride time, and just all out impressive. It would dominate the skyline. I also have no doubt it would draw the crowds in for a long time to come. Seriously hoping.

  19. Over the years there were many qualified steam drivers at Dreamworld, but now only one remains. He drives the diesel full-time, while other trained operators drive it on his days off and during his lunch breaks. Contrary to some opinion, the steam driver does not earn more than the other park operators - so he is not "expensive". It would be that the steam-qualified driver was driving the diesel the day it broke down so was available immediately to light the Baldwin at a moment's notice. His roster has him the driver 5 days a week. No need to worry about telephone calls. It would take two hours to prep the engine and raise steam, so there would be no great delay to the operating schedule. No big deal. At least it gives the driver something to do instead of sitting around doing nothing for the duration. How long will the steam operation last while the diesel is being repaired? Not known.

  20. Just because they drive a steam train doesn't necessarily mean their way of communication is also from the same period:
