Just adding a quick recap: Richard's closer look article is up on Parkz My in-depth article is now live on OurWorlds For those who don't like clicking or tapping, here's a quick photo dump from my end ( @Richard was ever so lucky to go on-site, meanwhile I snooped off-site with my telephoto lens.)14 points

Love they despite us waiting for quite a long time for all this, they just announced everything at once, spent time to do up a video showing it all off. At first I wasnt a massive fan of the name itself, but the theme/story of it I really do like, and a worthy theme for the attraction. As said, it really is a battle between joker and batman, with mentions of other characters throughout the queue/pre-lift hill. In regards to the name, it isn't exactly something that people could say as iconic, like how superman, green lantern, etc is. But if you say 'rival' to me at this stage it doesn't instantly make me think of the coaster. But I do think it suits the theme they are going for. The stats are great, and the speed this will get to will br insane through those twists and turns. And I really like how why've highlighted key moments, such as the non-inverting loop (something the GP may not be familiar too) and calling it a hypercoaster in its offical name. Very glad they delt with the colour debate. And we now know why there are four queue lanes, forward, backwards, fast track, single rider. The backwards would be insane, and definitely would only be for the real brave ones. I will try backwards out, but probably not until a few rides going forward. I don't think they need to have a full train backwards or even more seats, because some people prefer to ride normally from the back, and it may slow queue times down, especially if one of more popular than the other. The joker head at the top of the lift hill is a very cool touch, and if the mouth moves, that would be awesome. And really glad they are putting a foot bridge in. I assume you will walk between the posts which didn't have the fence installed, will be a perfect place for some photos of the coaster. Overall, very very excited for this, very glad it's been announced, and from the hype everyone and most news pages on FB have posted about it, the GP are also very excited too. MWs FB post alone has gotten 1.1 million views so far.9 points

TPR have posted the preview onto there their YouTube channel! I must admit, I'm lowkey enjoying the jealously of those Americans/Europeans who are wishing it was built closer to them nope! It's Australia's turn now!8 points

I am just so BEYOND shook. I randomly stumbled upon this site yesterday morning around 11:50 and was perusing the hypercoaster construction thread and saw a recent flurry of posts which alerted me to the impending announcement. I then proceeded over to Movie World's Facebook page and saw the video uploaded literally minutes before. I had never clicked a video THAT fast. Immediately I had goosebumps and shivers running my spine. That deep masculine voiceover, the pristine visuals, the CGI of the actual coaster in motion and then getting to witness the train design and the Joker at the top of the lift hill were all too much for my little body to handle, i was SHOOK TO MY CORE. But then the climax came when the "you can ride it...backwards" announcement came. Oh LORDT i was shooketh! Movie World, I want to thank you from the bottom of my happy heart from all of us in the coaster community for bringing this world class rollercoaster to Australia. Yesterday i bought 4 VIP passes for my family to enjoy to celebrate this groundbreaking event and to show appreciation to my favourite theme park for STEPPING UP THEIR TITTIES and delivering something revolutionary for us. Other local parks should take note because i don't see a bright future for some of them with Movie World taking the clear front lead ahead of the competition.... With 1.4 million views on Facebook, approaching 100 000 combined views on youtube and then other social media pages (twitter, instagram) and word of mouth taken into account, this coaster is doing just the trick for Movie World. And some of you thought they were stupid for leaving the announcement this late. Actually, i think they were rather smart. Look at all the hype they built up! And then, BAM! Millions of views in one day!4 points

Oh...wow ! Honestly...everything they revealed in the video is a huge win in my book. First of all the shaping of the first drop: Being a regular rider of Expedition GeForce I can tell you that the shaping is absolutely sublime. Sooo many people love the combination of the super steepness and the twist Then you`ll ge the huge airtime hill after the first drop and those little bunny hills close to the end...that adds so much to the parts of the layout we already knew, right? And the backwards seats? What an opputunity to get a whole different ride experience from what will already be a fantastic coaster ! No one will have to ride it like that...of course...but what an addition & extra kick for the brave! If it would be a neck breaker, Mack wouldn`t have done it...I absolutely trust Mack in that. So: I think you got the jackpot guys! All these things in combination with the sublime Mack trains? With lapbars only? I`m sold...4 points
-
I hope they have 3 trains, and then always use 2. That way you can have one in for maintenance at all times and the coaster will always be a 2 train system.4 points
-
For starters, I'm not sure why everyone is getting hung up on an MCBR. None of the Intamin Hypers use them, and Millennium Force is the only one that runs three due to having a separate unload. Secondly, if the ride time is 3 mins, then the dispatch interval cannot be 3 mins because you'd end up with a situation where every 2nd train would be stacking behind the one in the station (In other words no point running a 2nd train) The correct maths is to acertain the loading time, add that to the cycle time, and then that is the number of laps each train can do in an hour. Then double that because you have two trains running, and one train can be let off the lift as soon as the other has cleared the first brake run. So say they could check a train in one minute, that means a cycle time closer to 4 mins = 15 cycles per train. So 30 trains per hour = 660. But then again, that 3 min figure could be inclusive of the load/unload time. Flash is 2 mins from station to brakes (Video was taken in testing with a slow lift) but the Alvey POV seems to show the lift going faster but unfortunatley cuts most of the lift out. so 3 mins total cycle including loading could be a realistic upper limit? In which case 40 trains per hour can be sent, which is 880 per hour.4 points

Ardent / Main event is a major international company. They cannot afford to be cheap in the way they manage Dreamworld. As I said above, they need to either cough up some serious investment, or get out of the way and let someone else do so.2 points
-
Well said, I think a lot of international and interstate tourists that come to Australia go to both MW and DW, if you're on the GC you might as well do both while you're there.2 points
-
I wouldn't be surprised that the hypercoaster would put DW in an even worse position although, it could actually do the opposite. Sure, locals would probably opt to buy VRTP season passes instead of DW but the hypercoaster is going to bring people to the Gold Coast, it's an added reason for overseas tourists and even Australians not living on the GC to come to the Gold Coast. Many holiday go-ers may decide to spend a day at DreamWorld whilst they are on holiday, especially those overseas and may not ever come back to the Gold Coast, they're want to make the most out of their trip. It's optimistic, but it's possible2 points
-
I'm sorry but Sea World is in the heart of the touristy strip of the Gold Coast. It attracts far more international and interstate visitors based on it's proximity to tens of thousands of tourists every day. When I was last at Sea World i just remember the throngs of asian tourists travelling in packs. You don't see that as much in Dreamworld. Sea World's appeal also largely lies in it's animal experiences whereas Dreamworld's relies on it's rides to bring in visitors. You can't compare the two really, they're in different leagues and attract different demographics. Dreamworld's main competitor is Movie World. That is fact.2 points

Oh, but have they? But why? Did Tower of Terror suddenly lose popularity when they reversed the train? Does Mick Doohan dispatch with empty seats in the unpopular rows? No & No. If the train was half and half, people who cared would choose, and people who didn't care would choose whichever queue was shorter, which would naturally even things out. Many coasters around the world either face backwards, or have backwards travelling elements - including scooby. I guarantee we will look back at this discussion in a few years, saying 'why did people make such a big deal out of it?' Personally I think the backwards facing is a great idea, but do wish they'd have added more than a single row. That look of Joker's face as you lay on your back flying down the first drop!2 points

Here is some aerial footage of the construction so far. You actually get a sense of the scale of it. Superman looks tiny in the background.2 points

We swap each financial year between VRTP and Dreamworld passes, due to swap over to Dreamworld ones in a few weeks but the new coaster definitely has got us sticking with VRTP for another year. While updating Tiger Island, Corroboree, food areas etc is pleasing to the eye, it isn't enough to draw us back in when the alternative is a new coaster....and that's even with young kids who aren't tall enough to enjoy a lot of rides yet (oldest was only just tall enough for Road Runner before her 5th birthday).1 point

I think it's good that each park focuses on different types of attractions. I wouldn't want Dreamworld to be basically a copy of Movie World. I think the recent statement by Dreamworld that they intend to focus on offering "experiences that stay with you" rather than thrills, is potentially on the right path. Just depends on them making sure those new experiences are of high enough quality to impress their target customers enough that they'll go to Dreamworld in preference to Movie World. In other words, not everyone thinks a rollercoaster is the best type of theme park attraction, and if Dreamworld creates new rides and other attractions that appeal to those people who don't, then they should be able to secure those people as long-term customers. I keep saying this, but Dreamworld should focus their investments on creating Dream-like experiences (which can include rides, but also other attractions too).1 point

How else would you escape The Creeper? Instead of pushing people over I'm thinking of just leaving some of the kid’s toys on the floor for people to trip over. Being serious now @Reanimated35 in the grand finally there will be a slide. I'm still trying to work out how I'm going to keep the rats alive in the rat room.1 point

Weren't they doing Green Lantern walks though when Arkham was down last year? Here I was thinking a year ago that they'd never get around the OH&S on getting people up and down a lift hill, but a bit of logic and common sense usually gets around these things. If they really want to slam Star Tours sales, they'd be doing either walks or early morning runs on Rivals, just saying, so yeah, never say never.1 point

I liked more of the reveal shots, except for that shaky drone footage. Was like watching an epileptic kid in an earthquake filming on a potato. (I'm joking, it's really good. I kind of want a drone but would never use it. You did real good. And I really hope that was your footage else I've just offended some random media company 🤘)1 point

You mean like building Wedgie to fight Aqualoop? 'LOL'1 point

I'm writing something in this very vein (which you'll see up tomorrow) and my thesis is essentially that being a successful park requires major capex on big, thrilling attractions. Nothing garners more hits, more viewers, more eyeballs and ultimately more tickets purchased than something like a big ride. I know from my own stats on YouTube and on the site (and i'm sure @Richard will agree too) that in particular, roller-coasters garner a nearly ten-fold increase in hits versus any other attraction. Now, i'm not saying go crazy and build nothing but roller-coasters, because at the core of what makes Dreamworld so unique is the foundation of experiences that wrap around the property - so much so that the ability to have a little slice of everything in the space of a day over say going to many parks over many days is what will continue to keep Dreamworld open. But, also, if I had to be blunt, Ardent need to stop counting the pennies (something they've done since it was still MLT) and give Dreamworld's CEO the kind of money the place needs to fight a HyperCoaster. And that's not to say you need to fight dollar for dollar, you can be crafty and innovative and steal a huge chunk of the HyperCoaster thunder without spending the same amount, but for it to be effective they need to move, and move quick.1 point
-
Well that idea was fine...BEFORE 'the incident' but families aren't going back to Dreamworld like they used to, hence the large decline. They NEED a big, fast, twisty, full circuit, potentially record breaking coaster to bring the demographic back that WILL support them despite the bad reputation. That demographic is teenagers and young adults. Parents of young children have a lot more trepidation about re-visiting a theme park that is currently home to a SBNO ride that took the lives of four of it's patrons.1 point

The animals swimming in their huge natural habitats is what brings the people to SW. If they add more new animals to SW they will be ok, don’t you think @SHOOKETH1 point
-
Probably! dreamworld truly shows no initiative with attractions these days! It's partly the reason I don't go there anymore - last time I went was when I won the buzz saw comp to be the first to ride/sleep in dreamworld the night and I've had no interest to go back purely because everything is so old and dated. There is nothing worth going back over and over for me. Judging by the response from the general public with DC Rivals, it's pretty clear Australia wants more high end roller coasters, and I doubt DW will build one for many years, which answers your question.. yes it will further destroy dreamworlds legacy.1 point
-
My first thoughts is you should avoid using centre alignment on your posts. It has negative connotations around here.. and definitely don't use animated GIFs. For my thoughts, The dip in DW's statistics is to be expected. I don't believe the recovery from this is a 'few month' thing. It will take a few years for the park to bounce back, if it does at all, and only if management take the right path. Sure, they could open the southern hemispheres best XXXX, but most big thrill blockbusters have an element of fear to it - most thrills come from an appearance of danger - be that through speed, height, etc. Most of the big tickets that would have people flood back to the park would be deemed insensitive. The park is in desperate need of capital injection to secure it's future - and more than just improved facilities, exhibits and experiences. Few people rush out to buy an annual pass because stage 2 of the Corroboree is open, or the next part of Tiger Island is finished. The kind of excitement that we have witnessed on social media in the past 24 hours for the MW hyper is the kind of excitement DW need - people tagging their friends saying "we HAVE to go back" or "we HAVE to ride this". I also saw many people saying things like 'we usually alternate between DW and VRTP passes, but we will be keeping our VRTP passes this year for this!" The only folks who know whether that will happen are in the management of the park, and of Ardent \ Main Event. As has been said many times before, Only Time Will Tell.1 point

I know this has closed but I didn't know it existed. Can you “pretty please” before closing shop give us an extension to the end of June?1 point

@themeparkaddict As someone who also has to travel to get to the GC themeparks, I understand the disappointment when rides go down for maintenance after you book the flights/hotels ect. On the plus side though, if you go to Wet'n'Wild you get to ride the Tornado (which is essentially the Green Room). And the wedgie is a very uncomfortable slide experience, compared to WnW's Aqua Loops (you ain't missing out on much not being able to ride the wedgie). Supertubes is a bummer though.....probably the most unique slide at the park and my favourite.1 point

Just a guess, but I'd expect all the major JL characters and their rivals to play a part, apart from maybe Aquaman and/or Cyborg. So Batman and Joker (obviously), Superman and Lex Luthor (could be Brainiac/Bizarro/Zod instead), GL and Sinestro, WW and Cheetah, Flash and Professor Zoom (this could possibly be Captain Cold or Grodd instead), potentially Aquaman and Black Manta.1 point
-
Yup, there is no MCBR and the maintenance bay is only big enough for 1 train. So there is no way they can have 3 trains.1 point

@jack.c the park has given us lots of hints but the exact ride is unknown and this stage. However I have done some hunting and found this. http://westforce.com.au/projects/our-current-projects/ They refer to mi3 as a roller coaster. However its safe to say this is a mistake as Mark has basically said it will be a flat ride as 7.5 million won't get you a coaster. But the most interesting thing was that it had a photo which shows construction progress. Hopefully we get more information soon.1 point

Yeah I agree, I think the topic should be reopened as well. And meh, if you watch my live video on my blog when I first saw the track colour in person, I did refer to it as fucshia. It was the colour ID website thingy that added the 'pink' bit (no pun intended) lol. So I still called it and I intend to gloat over at least getting that part right haha 😜1 point

This coaster's layout is stunning. Looks to have fantastic pacing and a great mixture of elements that ensure you get a good mix of speed, twistyness, g-forces, and of course airtime. No doubt this will be the best coaster in Aus. It's hard to create re-rideability on a coaster, as it essentially follows the same track everytime. Yes you can move around the train, to experience the different forces. But adding those backwards seats, just makes it even more re-rideable! Fantastic move by VRTPs! As for the name.....terrible. I don't understand VRTP's obsession with putting the word 'coaster' in the rollercoaster's name. e.g. Storm Coaster, Green Lantern Coaster, Jet Rescue Coaster, DC Rivals Hypercoaster. It's very unimaginative....why is it needed? Also, 80% of people will need to google "what is DC" after they are told (only) the name of the ride. If DC was involved, then perhaps they are sponsoring the ride? 'presented by DC comics'? Thus they wanted the DC name in the ride title?1 point
-
WRONG (at all the backseat is bad comments) What do you do for the 6 months of the year this thing will run with one train? Simple, if you don't like gimmicks, don't ride backwards. If you want the back seat ride, sit 2nd to the back row, it's pretty well exactly the same as indicated above. Its a massive win and for the normal pack goer really high on the cool sale. Excellent move for the park in my opinion. Wait to see how many other parks order a new back row car. Also what the hell is wrong with all you 'too intense' people. Are you coaster enthusiasts or not?1 point
-
Plus 2nd row from back is still close enough to have essentially identical forces if you want a traditional airtime experience.1 point
-
But what better way to set yourself apart in the industry? I'd sacrifice a traditional backrow for a backwards car any day - particularly on this calibre of coaster. The layout is ridiculous as is.1 point

Absolute moron. I detest people who do things like this. If I could get my hands on him he might have even worse nightmares! Anyway it sounds like Dreamworld did absolutely nothing wrong in this case, so the lawsuit will just be a waste of his time. I do feel for Ardent though. The negative publicity from this is the last thing they needed.1 point

I think people are going to be pretty divided on this one and sorry @djrappa but I am going to have to disagree with almost all of what you don't like about it. - the new preshow and internal queue is vastly more entertaining with tonnes to take in and one of the best AA figures ever done. - the ride system's capabilities are being maximised with a far greater variance in motion, it's fast paced from start to end and is randomized. - the show itself is randomized with 6 different offerings, making it highly repeatable. - the entire attraction is beautifully irreverent and with the music back ground it just feels so damn fun! Just like the movie! - the overall ride experience is longer and more thrilling from beginning to end. For those who want the original Twilight Zone experience, the original Florida tower always has been the better experience with the 5th dimension room. I agree that much of GOTG looks very Universal, tbh it's a theme that is meant to be cheesy and given how well it has been executed I believe the ride is going to be a huge hit for Disney. Personally I can't wait to ride it 😃1 point

Dreamworld was profitable. It was making Tens-of-Millions of dollars a year in profit. Those profits were not being re-invested back into the park. They were being used to build Main Event Bowling Alleys in the United States. It is exactly that lack of re-investment into maintenance, park safety, and staff training that Dreamworld now finds itself in a position with 3 major rides closed, another undergoing extensive maintenance and a damaged brand - at a time when their competitor is building the largest and most expensive single attraction at an Australian Theme Park. I'm not buying the 'poor Ardent - just trying to feed hungry mouths' nonsense for a second. If they had been re-investing in the park, instead of bowling alleys they wouldn't be having these problems at all. This is a self-made problem for Ardent and I suspect a lot of people on this forum believe Ardent haven't learned a thing from it.1 point
