  3. Hi everyone, I'm new here but a long time reader of the forums and a huge fan of the Gold Coast theme parks. I live in New Zealand, and unfortunately we only have one 'real' theme park here; Rainbow's End. Although it's definitely not up to the standard of other parks overseas, and is quite small in size and number of attractions, personally I still think it is a great park with lots of potential. I don't see much regarding Rainbow's End here on Parkz, so I thought I would just let you all know about a few developments the park has recently completed. A few months ago, the 'AA Driver's Town' opened in the area where the old cinema 180 used to be. I checked it out a few weeks ago, and although obviously intended for young kids, it's still a good addition to the park and the facades and other details like traffic lights look really good. Rainbow's End also has a new modern front entrance and ticket booths which are a huge improvement over the old front gate where there was only one lane into the park! I also came across this article which is an interview with the CEO of Rainbow's End, Chris Deere. https://blooloop.com/features/going-for-gold-at-rainbows-end-how-kidz-kingdom-changed-the-theme-parks-fortunes/ He mentions how he wants to incorporate virtual and augmented reality into the park, as well as possibly adding a dark ride. If you're ever in the Auckland area, I really would recommend a visit to Rainbow's End because it is a good park; but don't have your expectations too high because it's definitely not on the level of Movie World or Dreamworld in terms of number/quality of attractions. My favourite rides at the park are the Stratosfear (Zamperla Discovery Revolution, does a 360° rotation), the Gold Rush (a small coaster through an abandoned gold mine, with animatronics and decent theming) and the Enchanted Forest log flume (it's a charming little ride ) Rainbow's End still has it's Arrow double corkscrew coaster (same ride as the Sea Viper), I believe it was built in 1986. It still seems to be running fine, but I would be happy if the park decided to remove it and replace it with a new coaster; obviously there's not much land (or money) to work with, but it would be a step in the right direction to help really transform the park. I'm interested to hear all of your thoughts on Rainbow's End and if you have any ideas for future attractions that could be possible for the future. I'm looking forward to being involved here on Parkz! (Photos from Rainbow's End's Facebook page)

  4. The documents on the website indicates that they think that the Gold Coast tourism and theme park industry is a viable one with solid projected growth. They also note that Ardent have significantly under-invested in development CapEx for their parks. From a stakeholder's perspective, the question is whether the capital required for Ardent to turn this division around is best served in that capacity, or would be better put to use fixing the botched Main Event roll-out in the USA. As it stands Ardent's current management want to have their cake and eat it too; they insist that they couldn't possibly want to sell the park (despite doing everything possible to indicate that is in fact on the cards), yet they are also doing nothing to suggest that they realise the kind of investment Dreamworld needs to rectify not just the fallout from what happened on Thunder River Rapids, but from a strategic and deliberate starving of capital for their 20-odd years of ownership.

  5. @Santa07 Exactly what I thought, and there is probably going to be about 10-20 metres of a vertical drop. This was the first up close look of the construction since Friday, and they have certainly progressed a lot. I'm thinking the lift hill could take a week or two to construct, but I imagine all track will be installed within the next 2-3 weeks. Train arrives early to mid August, testing begins by the end of August to early September.

  6. Looks like there's only a few weeks left of coaster construction, which is great since that'll mean they have plenty of time to work on theming and getting the ride tested before opening. That drop looks even crazier than I imagined.

  7. Just drove by and the first drop track now extends to just below the current top of the lift hill supports

  8. Curious as to why all the parkz news topics are now in the theme park discussion section not the latest news and updates...

  11. Yeah spin n spew is well and truly covered now in the little triangle with rampage, black widow and this. Family coaster , flume/log ride or lazy river next. I do understand the decision to purchase this ride though, just not my cup of tea.

  12. ^Weird, my thoughts exactly. It's great to see them adding to the park and I don't believe that they've lost their mojo since Mark left, but few of my friends will probably end up riding this. I can't stand spin and spews and I think this ride won't have that mass attraction that even Bounty's Revenge had. There are so many staples that AW could still cover without putting lots of people off side. Family coaster, anyone?

  13. Yeah, not excited about this addition one bit. Hopefully it does soak up some crowd though and it is always good to see investment in the park.

  14. Shame they didn't go for the larger model, of course it must have had a bigger price tag. Looks like the KMG XXL is still the largest swing ride in the country.

  15. Those stats mentioned by Mr Sharry -- 15m tower, 120°, 64km/hr (18m/s) with a 28m maximum swing height -- are the same as The Claw's stats. If this ride is actually any bigger than The Claw then it's a result of minor changes over the years to the exact same model from Intamin, rather than an actual larger version of the ride.

  16. They have been this way for about six months. A few reasons: testing showed that they got more exposure and interaction in this forum, the tagging system is able to make them stand out better than it used to, and of course... they are theme park related. The plan is to move all the old articles over (they'll of course be buried many pages back) and remove that section permanently. That just requires the development of a script that updates all the links and images in the old articles (some date back to Roller-Coaster.com.au days).

  17. The real question is how does an outlet with a small menu of pre-made fast food ever have a queue of 20 minutes? How much business is being lost by folks deciding that a $25 burger combo just isn't worth the wait in that scenario? I used the app once. I set a pick up about 15 minutes later because I wasn't nearby and was in no hurry. It pinged me about three minutes later saying my food is ready. When I finally arrived they didn't just grab the next burger sitting in the heat chute but rather ducked back into the kitchen and grabbed the same item that had been sitting god-knows-where waiting for me. I wrote a review on the system a year ago that I never hit publish on. This was early on so I'd like to think they fixed these pretty glaring issues, rendering my less-than-stellar review outdated.

  18. Will be interesting to see the size in person, its hard to judge in photos/videos. It didn't look that big when i drove past, in the photo's it looked huge and in the today tonight videos it looks about the same as the claw. I guess the bigger than the claw statement doesn't have to be by a lot to be true does it.. 1cm taller would still be "bigger than the claw"! I think it's a great addition either way, i loved the Claw!

  20. Actually no I dont "have to see" anything. I think it's pretty friken obvious whenever we give an instruction. Or state "on parkz, bla bla bla". Whenever someone posts "I" that's exactly what it means. And Jesus Christ let's not start deciding the validity of opinions or points by the up/down vote system.

  21. Or maybe there won't be a ride photo, and it will have Ride video, or maybe even both (forward gets a photo, backwards gets a video)

  26. I know the tip, that's how I access the articles, (but here's a hot tip - yesterday I went through google, and STILL got paywalled the first time. I had to close and reopen it twice before it let me in), but the posting of a news link here, without the article text inevitably gets someone going "i can't access it, it's behind a paywall" - and then cue several back-and-forth posts from people like you or me who know how to do it explaining to people how to access it through google. In the end, (for mine at least) i'd rather the article just got posted like @GoGoBoy said - plus, if the text is posted in the thread, it future proof's the thread against changed links on the external site. I went trawling back through the Kraken thread the other day, and the amount of broken links and hotlinked images that were broken was huge. As for clogging the thread, the article is precisely on topic, so I disagree it's doing anything but contributing.
