  1. Great pics! Man, that makes me want a version of Storm Runner here badly! The twisting Intamin puts into some of their track designs is pretty insane at times...
  2. Oh I meant it used to be world's tallest, it broke Millennium Force's height by a few feet or something tiny like that.
  3. Thanks for that. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember hearing about that. It is a bit strange they haven't just fixed it...Seems like such a waste considering how much they spent on the thing.
  4. I read on another message board that Steel Dragon 2000 in Japan is now closed. Seeing as the ride is only a few years old and held the "world's tallest" claim before Top Thrill Dragster, it seemed a bit odd. But sure enough, rcdb lists the ride as being SBNO since 2003. Does anyone know why Steel Dragon isn't running anymore? Just curious because it only spent less than 3 years in operation.
  5. The only death like that I know of happened in '99 at Paramount Great America when a 12 year old fell from the Drop Zone Stunt Tower (almost identical ride to Space Probe) If that's the reason, it took them a while to modify the restraints didn't it? Have there been any other incidents of that type?
  6. The one they rescued, if I remember what they said on the news right was a baby Dugong they called "Pig". Seaworld nursed him back to around 150kg or so....So yeah, that would match the weight given by Joz (assuming it's still young - I can't remember how long ago they rescued it)
  7. Is it the Dugong that Seaworld has been trying to rehabilitate? Didn't they have one that they rehabilitated then released, before it was found in ill health again?
  8. The quote from Dreamworld was originally that the Giant Drop would have cost "12 million to construct on a stand-alone basis". So perhaps that is their way of saying, "It was cheaper because we already had the tower, but 12 sounds more impressive". Such great marketing techniques
  9. It's been "claimed" by S&S (or so I've heard) that they already have the ability to break the 500 foot barrier.....Although that's just a rumour at the moment, but who knows?!
  10. Just released a short time ago... Six Flags Great Adventure will open the world's tallest, fastest roller-coaster in the world in 2005. Height: 456 feet Top Speed: 128mph (around 205kmh - my maths is a little off so feel free to correct) in 3.5 seconds Named Kingda Ka (translation anyone? apparently Ka is defined as God or deity), it will be located in a new jungle-themed area of the park. And the best bit is the bunny-hill after the top-hat....Looks awesome. Check out the pics and story here... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6127547/ http://mywebpages.comcast.net/burgantech/2005.png
  11. I'm sure Thunderbolt was considered a good ride in its day...But I think we've all got to admit that that day has passed. I never liked the ride. Personally, the pacing wasn't that great and the ride became plain boring after the loops. There was little, if any, air-time and any elements it had after the loops were tame at best. While it was historic in a sense - and I will always remember it fondly for that - it had its moment and it was time for Thunderbolt to go.
  12. Thanks for that...Some of them were mine but I accidently deleted them off my computer so they came in handy lol
  13. Antarctic Adventure was located in the historical Salamanca Place in Hobart, which is one of the 'touristy' areas of the city. I remember seeing it a few years back when I was down in Tasmania. I didn't go in because, to be honest, it looked pretty dull. It was basically a lot of exhibits of camp sites, models of explorers, and that sort of thing which have to do with expeditions in Antarctica. The "highlight" was supposedly a "cold room" which simulated the temperatures that adventurers had to endure in that area of the world. Was basically a more educational, museum-ish style of attraction. I assume it wasn't very popular, as it closed in November 2003.
  14. The more I think about it, the tackier it seems to leave bits and pieces of Thunderbolt around the park... True the ride was a landmark for some time, but if they are going to put some form of memorial I hope it's subtle... Although, I don't know why I'm worrying....It's not like Dreamworld to place things in strange places ;)
  15. So it seems DW started their marketing campaign during the coverage of tonight's Big Brother live eviction....I guess the reason they have left it so long to announce may be due to their Big Brother contract perhaps?? Either that or they didn't want to confuse visitors by running too many different attraction campaigns at once?? (Just posing some possibilities) Anyway, am I correct in guessing (as I'm sure some others in here may have as well) that the ride will be themed to a bird of some sort? (Just the impression I got from the advertisement and the press release).
  16. The Claw.....situated between Central Plaza, Nick Central and Ocean Parade.... Seems nicely...........plonked
  17. Just playing devil's advocate for a second (I'm not saying I agree with what has been done here), but it is common practice for many companies to restrict the pay rate that employees get until they have stayed with the company for a certain number of months. For many casual employees, that's the reality they face. I know of a lot of national employers who restrict their casual employees to a maximum of an 18 year old's wage for the first 3-6 months. What I strongly don't agree with is not paying workers overtime for Sundays and public holidays. That's ridiculous. The idea is that you work on days that aren't 'traditionally' work days and you get an incentive because of it. Why would someone work a public holiday when you could work a weekday for exactly the same rate? That just seems totally illogical to me. Do the workers at LPS even have a union behind them? If they do, they don't seem to be doing a very good job...
  18. I agree...But I think to ensure that morality is maintained, the restrictions of the laws should be tighter. A lot of businesses don't abide by them anymore because of the loop holes that can be abused
  19. The restrictions on Anzac Day trading vary from state to state. The restrictions in Victoria and Queensland are different to those of New South Wales. Restrictions on trading are listed under the Shops and Industries Act 1962, and I guess you could consider them to be pretty weak. Bookshops, chemists, cake and pastry shops, refreshment shops, restaurants, take-away food shops, fruit and vegetable shops, garden plant shops, newsagencies, pet shops, vehicle service shops and video shops are all listed as being exempt from the Anzac Day restrictions. In addition, if your store has less than four staff, you are also exempt. The NSW legislation only really governs retail stores. Seeing as Wonderland doesn't really fit that description - that could be the reason it doesn't have to comply with trading legislation. Also, businesses can apply for special permission to trade, and one of the reasons you can apply relates to a need to operate for the benefit of tourism. So I guess if you want to blame someone for Wonderland being able to trade on Anzac Day, blame the government, because our laws on it are pretty pathetic...
  20. Last time I heard (may have changed since), there was still another stage of the Luna Park renovations yet to be approved.... These included the high rise construction, cinemas, and a few other outlets. So I guess that explains some of the open areas which make the park look a little sparse at the moment. There's probably a few touch-ups yet to do, but let's not forget that the 1995 opening was rushed ahead by several months as well. When it opened back then there were a LOT of things that weren't finished. (Ie: Luna Park's restaurant wasn't open, the Big Dipper was meant to have been involved in further noise reduction work, queue lines weren't finished, and a lot of signage and buildings weren't painted or fully constructed). The opening weekend was very, very wet. Some very severe rainstorms hit the northern suburbs. So I wouldn't talk about it closing down just yet....
  21. Zodiac opened at PKI in 1975....So it's 29 years old this year.... http://www.geocities.com/toddpki/timeline.htm lists the opening but not the closing. However, a new attraction was placed on it's old site by the 1990 season, so Daniel's stats sound pretty much spot on
  22. I don't think I was patronising...Just pointing out that there's no use getting into people, especially those new to the board. Anyway, in the interest of keeping the harmony....That's all I'm going to say
  23. Daniel, to be perfectly blunt, I don't think you or anyone else here (with the exception of Richard) has any right to tell people they have no place on these boards....
  24. I agree, leaving the loops there sounds mighty tacky. Surely, it would just add to the clutter of the area, and let's face it, a lot of areas at DW do look very cluttered. The only way I can see this working, assuming they continue the Ocean Parade theme, is if they somehow work the loops to make it look like the coaster has been washed away by a huge tidal wave or something....But that's stretching things a lil
