Did Movieworld hold a media morning today for Green Lantern? In the 'recent status updates' feed, HarrisonKohn said "Off to Movie World Tomorrow for a Media Morning". Just wondering if Parkz was down there, any new news or pictures?
-
Themeparkreview also have Green Lantern train goodness on their website. Thought i'd just link the pics here; saves people from going through the whole IAAPA 2011 thread: So now we have on-board audio, a light-up Green Lantern symbol (on the trains) AND word of a $2 million euro ($2.65 million aus dollar) themeing budget. That money should give us some decent themeing surely?

^ I heard about that...love to know what the episode it is as well (name/number)? I came across this very cool water slide design the other day. It's called the 360Rush by SplashTacular. They aren't the most well known waterslide manufacturer, but they do have some very unique products; incorporating a lot of themeing into their slides, water screens and other interactive elements. I remember seeing their outlandish Alien Abduction product on display at IAAPA a couple years back......anyway back to the 360Rush. SplashTacular describes it as the "first-and only-dueling body bowl in the world". Now it's NOT just two separate bowls next to each other....rather it's two tubes/slides that end up into the same bowl. It's done in such a way that the two riders "chase each other around the bowl". It also has those drop chambers, like on the Aqualoops at Wet'n'wild. I'd love to see one of these hit our shores. Probably best suited for wet'n'wild considering they don't have a bowl slide as yet.

I don't think any more trims will be added actually woo! But...this might not exactly translate into more speed down the drop. My theory for why there are less trims on Green Lantern has to do with the small incline just before drop. I'm going to borrow Gazza's pic from a couple pages ago to explain this one: If you look closely at the turn around section after the lift hill, Green Lantern has a small incline/hill after the turn around leading into the drop. However, Steel Hawg has just a straight peice of track; no elevation change. So on SH more trims are needed to reduce the speed, to keep the forces intact (hopefully that makes sense). But with GL i'm guessing S&S's design intent is to slow the car right down just before the drop....to give it a 'Shiekra hanging sensation'. So the car will reduce it's speed because of the incline, hit the trims, crawl through them......and then drop. Yes there won't be trims down the drop, but you'll probably be going at the same velocity as SH because of that small hill; keeping the forces at a safe level. It'll feel different though as the car will be accelerating down the whole way...unlike SH which is a controlled descent. I much prefer our altered version as their won't be any brakes, all free-fall

^ Thanks for the picture westical. The ride keeps on looking better every day As more and more construction pics come in, it's becoming very hard not to like this coaster. And I see what you mean Gazza with the headchoppers through the square supports...very cool! The best bit is that we are getting a very refined El Loco design. It's as if S&S have addressed all the problems with the first 3 models and fixed them for the better. Some are big changes like the cars and harnesses. Others are slight adjustments...one that i just noticed now. There is a slight bump/hill before the drop, where as on Steel Hawg there is no hill before the drop. The outwards bank on Green Lantern also looks like it's angled steeper than SH?? Anyone else think so? compare At this rate the coaster will be completed by next week. Then they have around 2 months for station, themeing, paths/walkways and general area presentation.

What makes an inversion an inversion?

:S I agree...that curve back into the vertical looks terrible. But yeah it's a drop. -
What makes an inversion an inversion?
WalleyWorld replied to DaptoFunlandGuy's topic in Theme Park Discussion
ahh the good ol' 'what makes an inversion an inversion?' question. I'm pretty sure it's been discussed here before, or on another coaster forum. It's a vague and confusing area of discussion that doesn't have an answer set in stone. A question that I think really depends on what you define 'inversion' to be. What do you class as an inversion AlexB ? Do you believe that if track is angled such that it passes the vertical, it's an inversion? Well Wiki says: I agree with this statement, especially with the last sentence; which brings up an interesting argument. If you always define an inversion to be an element which turns your body such that your head is below your feet (passed the verical) is every overbanked turn in the world considered an inversion? So does that mean coasters like Millennium Force and Xcellerator have inversions? Do overbanks count as an inversion then Gazza? Considering they have an inward curve initially and then go past 90 degrees. Green Lantern's drop will turn riders into that 'head before feet' position, but I don't believe it's an inversion. An inversion to me is when the track is turned upside down so that it is perpendicular to the ground. So at any point during the inversion, the track does this: But heck, even that defintion is flawed. What about Hydra at Dorney Park. Rcdb.com considers it's cobra roll to be an inversion, but its track never becomes perpendicular to the ground. So confused lol :S -
^ This; I agree completely. Buzzsaw, as stated above, is a one-trick pony. But I must say, it does do it's 'one trick' very well. Because of this, the ride is actually a lot of fun...but very short. The first thing I'll say is that the ride-ops make an effort to really staple you into this ride.. o.O. After being pinned into your seat, you're off. Going up the lift hill, the reclined seats make you slip backwards a little which gives you a taste of what is to come. Same thoughts here. As the lift hill peaks and the train slowly rolls towards the in-line twist, you come off your seat slightly and hang........This is the best part of the ride; as it's intimidating and thrilling. I would say that the Wipeout gives a similar hang time experience...but Buzzsaw's is 40 m in the air. You then do the in-line twist and dive down to the ground. The speed at the bottom of the drop is quite decent, which is 2nd highlight of the ride. If you are sitting in the back row (which I suggest) as you return backwards into the in-line twist you get some more hang time. Then it's back through the station and into an abrupt stop on the vertical before being lowered into the station. One thing to note, the ride is rough. When it goes through the twist, it kinda does the vekoma jerking motion. Not really a fan of that, especially as it's brand new. As for presentation, it works. It's an eye catcher from the high way and from inside the park. Dreamworld have really put some effort into it's themeing. For dreamworld's standards the ride's queue building and station look really good. There is actually themeing that makes sense. Buzzsaw name, so we are in a saw mill; check. The storyline isn't obvious, in fact it's not at all explained. If I didn't read up on dw's website, i would have no idea why there are weird spooky voices every now and then. It gets hot in there...more fans needed definitely. Overall it is a fun ride. But not particularly intense and way too short. The hang time is the most thrilling aspect, plus the speed took me by surprise. But I have a feeling that this ride will become boring after a couple rides; even in the gp's eyes.

^ Sure does look amazing And I bet it looks much more intimidating in real life. The drop will sell this rollercoaster....just look at the comments on fb; plenty of people 'woah'ing' at the steepness. Just a side note: I'm so, soooo happy that we are getting the 8 seater cars and lap-bar only restraints. Sitting on the furthest seat of either row (having no track directly in front of you), whilst taking that drop, will be a lot of fun.

Shortest = Wild West Falls has always been under a 15 minute wait for me...such great capacity that ride has. Nearly always a walk on. On my latest visit to MW, at one point in the day Scooby Doo was a walk on; only by luck though. We were walking past scooby to see the "we are experiencing technical difficulties" sign be pulled away from the entrance, and let people in. We walked straight on, and we were the first people to ride.....good timing i guess Longest = 1 hr (sometimes 1hr 15 mins) for Superman Escape. I've had this wait multiple times actually :/ And it's only because they run one train on days when they should be running two; really annoying. Many years, i have visited MW the week before the September school holidays...which is not an extremely busy time, but busy enough to cause 40 minute waits with one train. However, this year I went on a Saturday (which was the first day of official school holidays in September), and they were running 2 trains...why run it anyway else!!!?????? Max wait all day was 20 mins. So there you go, wait times were less during a peak period wtf?! ToT in the early 2000's (04/05) i remember waiting around 40 mins to an hour. Longest I have waited for a waterslide would be around 30-35 mins for Super Tubes when WWW first opened. ------------------------------------------ On the topic of wait times, I noticed that the gc themeparks this year didn't have long queues. Went to MW, DW and SW in September (week before school holidays): The parks were not very busy at all. Compared to 3 years ago (when i visited at the same time), wait times have decreased. Which I found very strange, considering how cheap it is now to visit the parks. At DW all rides were a 15 minute wait or less all day...with the exception of Buzzsaw (just opened) and ToTII; both having 30 to 1 hour waits. Giant Drop was pretty much "wait one cycle, get on" all day. So plenty of re-rides there. We comfortably did DW in one day...with MANY re-rides. Even a ride op i talked to commented on the lack of visitors during this period. weird. I then visited Movieworld first on a weekday, where the lines were as expected; SE 30 to 50 mins all day except the early morn, scooby 15 to 30, WWF 20 mins max, Batwing 25 mins to 30 mins. Second visit was on a Saturday, where everything was so much better; SE 20 mins max (running 2 trains), scooby 15 max, WWF 15 mins max. Seaworld. Both coasters were only a 10-15 min wait at most. Jet Rescue broke down an hour into my day at Seaworld, so it made the line longer at Sea Viper. But still only a 15 min wait or less.

Movieworld have posted up a new construction pic of Green Lantern...well I asked them for one, and 24 hours later... bam! Gees its gone up fast o.O ...what's it been; around 3 weeks now?? They have finished the main support structure, and are moving onto the track. It seems as if movieworld's "changing our skyline, one superhero ride at a time" scheme is working. It's going to be a great spectacle as you drive in and walk up to the gates of the park. Now with Superman, Batwing and Green Lantern dominating the skyline.

The Parkz Update: Movie World, October 4 2011
WalleyWorld replied to Richard's topic in Latest News & Updates
Well the top room (turntable before drop) has been under par, themeing wise, since the fire (in 2003/02?). The fire ruined all the effects and movieworld didn't end up replacing the original effects; which is a real shame now reading Wyncenuros' post. Also since then, the sparkers in the lift hill stopped working as well...which i remember being a really cool effect. BUT, I remember going a couple years back when there was no ghosts, and no audio...now they are back, so props to movieworld for fixing those They have pretty much fixed everything now. Maybe the only negative change is the removal of those wooden trusses. IMO the ride looks and rides better than before. defs check it out if you get the chance -

The Parkz Update: Movie World, October 4 2011
WalleyWorld replied to Richard's topic in Latest News & Updates
Me I had the chance to ride it the week after it came out of its refurb. And no...i'm pretty sure the angle/slope of the drop hasn't changed one bit; it's just the camera angle that the photo has been taken at. Incidentally, I also took some photos of the ride when I was there. So here is my picture, which you can compare to the Parkz update and reanimated's pic: As you can see it really just depends on where your standing around the ride. yeah maybe the drop was tweaked a little during the rehab. But they would have been small changes; nothing blatantly obvious like the slope. In fact I just noticed it now, if you look carefully at reanimated's pic, under the drop, you'll see some wooden trusses. Look at mine, the wood is gone. Also, the doors on the final drop have been replaced with a brand new set of doors, which have a grey colour. As for how it now rides, my brother and I found that the drop was actually a lot smoother and a little faster (probably because everything is new again). Angle felt the same as before. But holly crap....Wild West Falls now looks amazing! Maybe because I haven't been to mw in 3 years, but the area around the ride and queue seems to have been given a fresh coat of paint. The area looks so nice...truly a world class themed area and ride. Effects have been fixed as well, which really shows that WVTP's still want to keep their rides up to standard. Before the first lift hill, the sign swings a little and the crane/digger does a cool jolty lift as your boat passes (haven't seen that before). Before the backwards drop the peppers ghost is back and they actually speak. The lever pulls down and your sent backwards. Their is an air cannon affect it the drop I'm pretty sure. You can feel a lot of air rush by you. The dynamite affect on the bridge actually smokes now (yes smoke!), just before the blowing up sound effect. The smoke is also working on the fire near the tepees. Moving on, the swinging tavern doors, air through curtain, collapsing railing, water trough and water barrel holes effects were all working in the western town. On the lift hill there is one peppers ghost working that screams..."get out, get out she's gonna blow". Apart from that the drop is still short of the sparkers, and the top of the hill is under par. I'm still confused why there is a mirror there :S Can anyone tell me what themeing used to be on the lift hill and around the turntable at the top? -
The Parkz Update: Movie World, September 30 2011

New trains...yes please! I've been wondering if Movieworld would ever purchase new trains for lethal, especially after my recent visit. To be frank, it hurt Even the general public thought so...with each train that rolled back into the station, at least 1 person was holding their head with a dissatisfied look on their face. The head banging really distracts you from what is a very good coaster layout (disorientating as hell...in a good way!). Even in the front I still was bashed around quite a bit. I was trying so hard to keep my head back and to the side of the head rest that all the fun in riding a coaster was lost :/ Hopefully these new trains by KumbaK will make the ride a lot smoother. Although I am impressed that MW are giving lethal a much needed upgrade =), something needs to be done about the lethal weapon area and queue. Because the queue has changed places there is a lot of unused space, leaving the whole theatre entry unused, the lethal petrol station shop closed and china town a little deserted. The new entry looks terrible...just a hole in the shed wall with shade sails recycled from the theatre entry Plus the new queue misses the mark, compared to what it used to be. Just another thought...is Lethal Weapon a dying/dead movie franchise? I have a feeling that the teenagers of today wouldn't have a clue that it relates to a movie, let alone even watched the Lethal Weapon movies....heck I haven't even seen them! Along with the new trains, I think a re theme and name change is in order. WVTP did a great job with the Corkscrew, why not for Lethal? With some good marketing, it'll give the ol' hang 'n' bang a new lease of life. -
I was at Movieworld yesterday (sat 24/9) and took some photos of the coaster going vertical. I was up from Melbourne during the past week, so to see some construction whilst on holidays was pretty cool. I can't wait to come back and get on this ride though...looks really cool already haha They have placed some nice promotional banners on the construction fences which show off the new lap-bar only restraints and 4 across seating! I'm personally a huge fan of lap-bar only restraints...it gives you an insecure feeling, especially on a ride like this where there will be a lot of hang time. They were working mainly on pouring concrete footers when I was there, no track/support assembly. But this is what they are up to as of yesterday:

Is there a separate queue for Q4U on buzzsaw? Or is Q4U not available for this ride?
-
just been going through the facebook themepark websites. Looks like the general public, and even some coaster enthusiasts, are really liking Buzzsaw. People are claiming some very interesting things, saying that this coaster is 'better than superman', the 'best thrill ride in Australia'....whaaat lol Better than Superman??? really? I'm a bit shocked there o_O we'll see if this is true when I get a chance to ride it next week

Found another on-ride video, but this shows the extended ride cycle: http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2011/09/16/350061_gold-coast-news.html To be honest it looks like a fun ride, but nothing amazing. I'm still worried about the horrible capacity though, especially in the first weeks of operation :S
-
Movieworld have started releasing pictures of the new coaster on their Facebook page...slowly haha Basically what they are doing is posting cropped images of the structure and track, which will eventually make up the pieces of a larger photo...displaying the ride. Kinda like a puzzle. It looks like they are using a computer generated image. They have already posted up 4 puzzle pieces. I'm really pleased to see the social media interaction being used by MW to get the hype going. They are doing a good job with it as well; people are actually interested by the looks of the comments. I've been hawking their page for the last couple of days to make sure I don't miss a piece of the puzzle haha. can't wait for this new coaster =D

I'm going up to the gold coast on the 19th of sept. (which I believe is the start of Queensland school holidays). I'm planning on renting a q4u for my brother and I, but I really haven't heard much about it. I'd imagine Buzzsaw's line to be extremely long, being its first week of official operation. Getting the q4u for that ride alone will probably be worth it because of its terrible capacity lol So I was just wondering if anyone has used it, and what are your thoughts about it? Also with how it works: when your little device tells you it's time to ride, do you just rock up to the claw, for example, and immediately get on the next cycle? Or is there a small line for q4u users? And also, Because these things are limited, is it better for me to pre-purchase the q4u over the net, or at the park when I arrive in the morning? Thanks =)

Green lantern? I'm a little disappointed actually. I saw this coaster type as a perfect opportunity to use the joker or the riddler as the theme...el loco's have elements that are wacky, crazy...just like the personalities of the aforementioned super villains. Besides we don't have a ride at movie world themed to a super villian, it would break it up a bit with all the heroes (superman, batman, scooby gang). It's going to be interesting to see what the storyline (if any) will be for this ride. Because at the moment i'm finding it hard to think of something that fits with the el loco design. Anybody have any ideas? Movieworld have done a fantastic job with taking a variety of ride/rollercoaster types and giving them an appropriate theme. e.g. Wild mouse for scooby (small cars and tight cornering pays respect to a traditional haunted house ride), rocket coaster for a Superman theme (0-100 in 2 seconds...mimics superman's super speed and flight), Batwing (vertical launch, just like the the Batwing aircraft). And I'm sure this time will be no exception. yeah, I might be a little bummed about the theme, but I'm confident whatever MW have up their sleeve won't let us down Plus, if the ride turns out to be good, it'll make up for it. But.....please, whatever they do, hopefully they won't go for the 'six flags' look, when it comes to superhero themed rides (http://rcdb.com/9519.htm?p=35389 Stick on some graphics and a statue of the green lantern's lantern lolololol

It looks like there will be some special parade for the September school holidays this year. It says so on the VIP Pass page for Movieworld http://myfun.com.au/big3/Movie-world.aspx : Sounds interesting, but I wish there was more info about it :/ Obviously it's not that major considering it's only mentioned very briefly on their ticketing website. It's not even mentioned in the latest news section on the movieworld main website. Their lack of advertising is a little concerning, especially being 2 weeks until the holidays start, and with Dreamworld raring to go with the opening of Buzzsaw. A parade might not be huge, but Movieworld have nothing atm to go up against dw's new ride. Fingers crossed they have a good social media/advertising campaign up their sleeves for the new coaster. Not just 2 months before...the hype machine should start now for the new ride. Considering a good portion of the parks customers come from interstate, give them something to look forward to now, so they have the time to pre-book tickets, flights, accommodation, ect.

that actually crossed my mind after I made my post haha. Makes sense

I was just checking out the B-Roll video for the new Premier superman coaster. Something that kinda startled me was that there are trim brakes on the top portion of the ride o_O. Two of them actually... One just before the heart line roll, and then another before the twisting vertical drop. I'm guessing it's done to tease the riders before heading into the roll and the drop (kinda like the slow creeping motion that Sheikra does before the vertical drop). I don't think it suits this coaster really. IMO the ride would be more thrilling without them; probably a lot more airtime down the drop. b-roll clip:
