  1. while I would hate to see Tom Sawyer leave disney, it is a fact that all organisations need to move with the times. Consider if movie world still had the young einstein gravity homestead? or the gremlins ride? most kids today would not know what we are talking about.... hence new additions like scooby doo, harry potter, the matrix, shrek and so on. Honestly, the island needs to be heritage listed as a tribute to walt himself, but they do need to move with it, and the island is valuable real estate in the park that you can't take up with something just gathering dust. I am of mixed opinion, however anyone who has seen the documentary done by discovery channel on the creation of Expedition Everest will know that the standards of theming for any new walk through attraction will be higher than ever before.
  2. I find that hard to believe.... A second train can enter the station and stage itself before the first train has departed the top of the lift hill. If there is nobody getting off or on, all they need do is release the harnesses electronically, then immediately re-lock them (some coasters will not allow a train to cycle a second time until the harnesses have unlocked and relocked) and then two ops just run down the train pulling on the harnesses. I guarantee they can have that done before the first train hits the bottom helix.
  3. seems weird that this appears to be coming from a 19 year old... but besides that fact, Joz, can you possibly shut this one down too? While Im sure she has the best of intentions, WG87 seems to be doing nothing but making inflammatory comments to reasonable statements. Wonderland Girl - just a pointer, but if you seem to be making so many mistakes because you are tired etc, might I suggest not posting at 2am when the human body is at it's lowest ebb. Might I suggest a post time more suitable - such as between sunrise and sunset?
  4. unless this is a repeated occurrence over multiple days, is it not possible that after both trains were set for the day that something occurred forcing them to remove it from circulation, however they were unable to transfer it back off the track - so for example if the restraints would not lock in? Maintenance is unavailable to fix the restraints, so they just cycle the train with nobody on it. the cycle time would barely be impacted, because they would still be able to despatch the blue train in time to bring the red train in from the brakes run with barely a pause.
  5. This also occurred to me yesterday as well. I am the only enthusiast where I work, and the others tolerate my interests only because they have no choice, but one of my staff received a QLD holiday as a 21st birthday present, and their plans were to tour the parks while they were there. Me telling her about WWW was the first she had heard about it. she is going to be up there just before christmas and yet had heard nothing about the park. Had I not mentioned it to her, the first she would have heard about it would have been when she arrived at DW to do the tiger walk. She now has plans to visit WWW as well, but I think this is a very silly move by DW not to be hammering the hell out of it - the first new park on the gold coast in over a decade... Admittedly, they may be holding their advertising simply because they feel that enough word is out there that they will run at capacity for the entire christmas holiday period, but I don't think this is the case. Dreamworld had better pull out all the stops and advertise the hell out of WWW everywhere they can, and fast, because by now, most people who will go to the goldcoast have already made their plans, and trying to fit yet another park into their itinerary will put a strain both on their plans and their wallets and they may just decide not to go. Having said that - the first and only advertisement I have seen for WWW outside the internet was in my local NRMA (RACQ) office, and only because I was walking past on the way to the bank and I recognised the logo already. Imagine if I didn't know about the park already? I would have written it off to some new area of WnW... Dreamworld need to pick up their act. Sure the tourism award is one thing, but I'm sure a number of people will agree that there was no major reasoning why DW should have received that award this year, with so many other reasons out there for them to not win it...
  6. reading the job article, I would say that it has been mis-read as per the starting date. best bet is the "Starting date" of 2nd december would be when they will commence the rehearsals and scream schools. My money is on opening day being either start of school holidays or boxing day. If it is boxing day, that gives construction for about 45 days give or take from now, which is plenty of time for it, if you consider the company that does this, does it regularly and would have most of the equipment and materials they need. So auditions around the 26th i think? leaves them a month for training. plenty of time...
  7. Just a question to that one Adam, but you talk in bad terms of woodies "aesthetically", and then go on to say theres a reason why Disney would never get a woodie. I am presuming since they are said almost in the same breath that you are speaking of the aesthetics as being the reason why disney would not get one? In that case, how do you explain the theming to Cal Screamin? Yes its steel, but its MADE TO LOOK like a woodie....?
  8. lol... im sorry Clint dude... I wasn't offended nor was I trying to imply anyone was. we all know exactly what you meant... I was just taking the p!ss....
  9. Now Now Clint..... as a community leader, one would presume that you would be the best example of the community guidelines - namely swearing in any manner is not acceptable, and the use of stars, or other symbols to bypass the filter is considered just as bad.... tut tut... naughty naughty.
  10. im sure somebody has talked about this already, but if you look at the lethal weapon station, behind the individual queue line area on the station platform itself, there are doorways leading out behind the platform. It would not be hard to construct a queue line that ran out that way back towards the superman piazza. the exit could either run the same way through the shop, or they could close the shop, and relocate over to the same side as the entrance to the piazza. it would not be hard to run a pathway under the lift hill - locate it out a few metres past the station, cover it with chain link so falling objects aren't a concern, and put the gift shop there between the lift hill and the new entrance...? It doesnt have to be permanent, because it would be a shame to relocate it all over there when all the chinatown theming and the signage on main street are all in the other direction, but they could construct the new entrance and exit without closing the ride (except maybe the two metre section under the lift hill which wouldn't take long) and then just overnight reroute all the guests heading for the old queue down to superman with signage and barricades, and tear up broadway...
  11. im not sure this is accurate, but im sure I remember someone talking about an accident on probe involving the magnets. As far as I recall, the way it was talked about, the magnets on probe were mounted to the tower, not the gondola. Im sure Supersleuth could enlighten us.....
  12. bussy my comments were backing you up, reinforcing if you will...
  13. bear in mind, done properly, it can be done. Jamberoo for instance is completely water self sufficient. More to come on that later.
  14. i think the scenic railway referred to at the start was actually the scenic railway at LPM, which I believe would be classified the oldest roller coaster in australia. I can't really call SR in SW Katoomba a rollercoaster. Bussy the name of the OHS manager was Dave, he was canadian, and last I heard he was custom building a touring coach to travel around the americas in (like a 5 axle luxury bus).
  15. Well.... no time like the present Bussy....??? I remember the filming they did in 2001 around the park. A group of actors and a film crew roving the park shooting lots of stuff. Endeavour was particularly funny. The camera crew wanted to record the family on endeavour, but of course, when Endeavour cycles, it tilts. Undercarriage and machinery made for lousy filming.... so what do you do? Hold down the button used to align the gangplank after the cycle, and just let it spin.... Of course, the operator at the time wasn't too sure of this, and I think a certain park supervisor came down to "give the ok". Well, of course, as you can imagine, nothing went wrong... until the operator released the button. For those unaware, Endeavour brakes by simply locking up the tyres used to spin the ship. This is a simple system in itself because the only time these wheels would lock up is when the ship is turning very slowly as the operator trys to stage the platform. So after letting it free spin without check for almost ten minutes, and then locking up the tyres... anybody guess what happened? Then there was the goldrush theming. A cool autumn day as I recall, when a woman and her group were sitting by Snowy watching their family ride. The wooden troughs that wound their way through goldrush overhead had been standing for a few years, and the trough over the observation area decided now was a good time to collapse right on top of them. I think it was a narrow escape... but the next day maintenance had removed every last one of the troughs that passed over pedestrian areas, and planted small flowers in the holes they left. Now to rehash an old classic story told on these boards a couple of times - but the time Skyrider locked up (like it never happened before....) and Zoe attended the HB station to supervise. She came out over the loudspeaker to the passengers (did i mention the loudspeakers were mounted on EVERY pole of skyrider throughout the park?)... and after addressing the guests with the usual "working on the situation, we'll have you down soon" speech, she put the microphone down, forgot to turn it off, and several thousand guests throughout the park heard her utter (shout) some very rude language... Then of course theres the composure our security control room showed... I was at a post that required a radio, and as I would not need to be contacted, I only needed the radio to make contact myself, I would frequently listen in on the operations channel. It went something like this: Operator: Dodgems to Post Post: go ahead Operator: i've got a fire on the floor of dodgems Post: Say Again? Operator: Fire at dodgems Post: Dodgems go to Channel 9 immediately. The operator had announced a fire on a ride in plain english on a channel open across most of the park - every operations person with a radio heard that, along with every guest in their vicinity. The action man crew also did quite well. I remember being the photographer for one of their shows, and seeing Dr X land quite badly after a particular stunt. He seemed to favour it a bit, but continued to do the whole show. At the end of the show, after posing for photos, I found out X had a badly sprained ankle, and he still completed the rest of the show despite the pain. My last story for the moment involved every single person in the park hearing a rather loud bang. The was of course when the cable snapped on demon, and - bogey and all, came rushing through the station, damaging several brake points and a few wheels as the bogey's under carriage entered the station.
  16. If you have been reading out at www.----URL removed for non-compliance with Community Guidelines----.com or surfing the wonderland boards for much time at all, you will know that DJ has a plethora of information concerning WLS that could only have been gleaned from working there. Besides relocating the demon, and being one of the people who contributed so much information to www.----URL removed for non-compliance with Community Guidelines----.com himself, I think its safe to say he worked there long enough. Besides of which, I also worked there - there are many former wls employees on these boards...
  17. To heat that much water in the space of a few hours? Hope they have a Volcano handy... it would be impossible for them to heat the pools and slides up for night time. . . it would just take too long. We used to have a gas heated spa, and it would take a good 3 hours for the gas to heat up a single spa bath for 8 people. imagine trying to heat the wave pool without an enclosed roof??????
  18. I can't really agree with that. Steve always treasured the zoo, and spent a lot of time there. Yes he did his tv shows, appearances on talk shows and such, but the zoo was the core business. All of the staff at Australia Zoo looked to steve a bit like a father. they idolised him, and steve was always on site to handle the heavy-duty work when it was required. He was also heavily invested in the interests of the wildlife hospital, and I understand funding had only just been approved to begin its expansion into the biggest facility of its kind here in australia. Steve was very passionate about his work with animals, and making others aware of the need for conservation. His Wildlife Warriors fund is more evidence of this, and this is based out of the hospital. Im putting 2 to 1 odds in favour that this hospital when completed will be renamed in Steve's honor, and I for one totally support that. Australia has lost one of its biggest icons in the international arena, as well as one of our biggest voices for the care and conservation of our wildlife. But the bottom line is that while the day to day running of the zoo was entrusted to someone else, the public came to Australia Zoo to see "The Crocodile Hunter", especially the americans and asian market. If Steve were not heavily involved with the zoo, the attraction would not nearly be as big as it is. You could never know when you would be at the park and have to dive to the side as steve and his keepers manhandled a massive croc through the ground of the zoo. The Zoo will not be the same. It is sad that Steve left before passing on his legacy to Bindi and Bob in full. I cannot see them becoming nearly as involved as they would have had steve lived, unless Terri steps in and ensures that they do. The children are way too young to have fixed an attachment on the wildlife love that steve has. The only thing we can hope for is that Terri can guide those kids down the right path, and I for one thinks this little American girl may just have the gumption to do just that. Rest In Peace Steve, Australia, It's wildlife, and indeed half the civilised world will miss you on our screens, guarding our native wildlife, and in our hearts.
  19. From Daily Telegraph: CROCODILE Hunter Steve Irwin has died after a string-ray barb caught him in the chest. The 44-year-old international TV star was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the incident happened. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas. It is understood Irwin was killed around midday. Irwin leaves his wife Terri and young children Bob and and Bindi. The blonde star of Crocodile Hunter, who made khaki shorts and boots his uniform all year round, was an Australian icon. But his reptile wrestling antics thrilled overseas audiences even more and he became a fixture on US television in the past decade. The son of naturalists Bob and Lyn Irwin, Steve learned to live with dangerous reptiles from a young age at the family’s Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. He opened his own Australia Zoo in Queensland in 1991, leading him to record the hugely popular Crocodile Hunter the following year. His catchcry of “Crikey!” brought the unfashionable Aussie phrase back into vogue. Irwin’s work had a serious side. He was recently made the face of Australia’s quarantine laws and appeared in TV advertisements urging travellers not to endanger Australia’s unique flora and fauna by bringing in foreign specimens. For all his love of animals, Irwin’s first duty was to his US-born wife, Terri Reines, who appeared by his side from the very first episode of the Crocodile Hunter. In 1998, their daughter Bindi Sue was born and drafted straight into the family business. A son, Robert Clarence, was born in 2003 and Irwin made world headlines - and suffered a dent on his popularity - when he took the baby boy into a crocodile enclosure, leading critics to accuse him of neglect.
  20. i need a little help figuring something out. I am currently in career mode - Scenario 15 - La-La Land. Everything goes well in the park until august 25, when clint bushton enters the park. I always have the fireworks set up and ready to go, but he always spends less than 60 seconds in the park, and leaves, before the fireworks show starts or finishes. what am i doing wrong? i have tried all the walkthroughs, and I won't use cheats.... any ideas anyone?
  21. this is a really bad image because im only working off the original image posted. i couldn't be bothered going into great detail, so this is a basic runout of the indoor track sections. size wise, there is no room available to put in a flat inside the sound stage.
  22. interesting to note, reading that MLE EOFY report that interstate attendance to dreamworld has increased sizeably, and it now almost equals the QLD attendance, as opposed to last year when there was a substantial difference... a bit of a shame that the international tourism market has dropped off a bit. One would think with all the terror going on out there that we would be a plum destination at present, with the lack of any real terrorist threat at this time... Looking at the trend graphic over the last 7 years, the international market seems to be shrinking for DW. anybody got figures on what WVTP's international draw is? <edit:> Although now that I think on it, maybe everyone is afraid of international travel, hence the domestic market increase...? Its nice to see the nick area of the water park will have a tipping bucket. Any waterpark would benefit from this type of attraction. Its also a great way to cool off without having to get in a pool.... eg: when you've just eaten but can't swim yet...
  23. interesting to note - in number 3, that the whole time, every paragraph of the article is plugging and plugging the safety message... just how safe the coasters will be and what measures they are taking to ensure this. they talk of the "pioneering new FIN BRAKING SYSTEM" and so on.... hammering home how safe the coasters will be - "safer than billiards or badminton"... must have been a bit of scare out there during the initial promo time...
  24. it is a good point Joz, but depends on how the rules are set out. If they say no loose items, then theoretically, if using a strap or so on, it isn't loose. If they say no photography or videography on the rides, thats a different story. But if they don't implicitly state it is a safety rule, then it is debatable whether it is covered by OH&S regulations. If I remember correctly, wonderland had "no loose items" but I don't believe they prohibited photography on rides. This is how I came to film my own on-ride POV videos of Beast and Demon. (im slowly editing these, and will make them available in due course.) Yes it could be construed as a safety issue, but this is where "see something, say something" comes into play. Unless somebody identifies that that is a safety risk, and the risk management \ OH&S people step in and say "No Cameras for safety reasons" then I can't see how they're breaking those regulations. For months, the place where I work has had a slow chemical leak on a piece of machinery. Everyone knew about it, and we had MSDS sheets for the treatment of leaks, but it wasn't until one of our bigwigs came in and said "that leak is not acceptable and must be fixed" was it identified as a hazard above and beyond our normal working hazardous areas. Essentially at lower management level, we had looked at it and said "yes, its a low-risk hazard. It will cost $4500 to fix, or $2 a week to contain and mop up. It was not an immediate danger unless somebody started licking it up off the floor, and everyone was aware of it. . . so the regulations on OH&S only come into play if someone has identified the hazard, trained the operators and staff who utilise the area, and advised them it was breaching those regulations...
  25. I don't want to sound too cynical, but how reliable is this information? where is the source? I don't want to sound ungrateful for the information that has been provided, but there has been misleading information posted here in the past, and I usually don't trust info unless it comes from Richard, Joz, Rabid or Slick...
