Disney bringing Avatar to Animal Kingdom
aussienetman replied to aussienetman's topic in Theme Park Discussion
My thoughts on this.... I don't like it. I was not a fan of the movie (the only amazing thing was the 3D) and although it is the highest grossing film of all time Disney better have something amazing in store. Some people are taking this news as the "potter killer" and others (like myself) don't really see what the fuss ie about. I am like a few of the other writers I have read this morning who believe a Lord of the Rings or Star Wars land have a lot more story telling opportunities. Avatars story of respecting nature suits AK well, but without seeing what they actually have planned, I remain sceptical. Nathan -
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2011/09/details-emerge-about-disneys-plans-to-bring-avatar-to-its-parks.html The Walt Disney Co. has struck a deal to bring the fantasy world of "Avatar" to Disney Parks, starting with a multi-attraction themed land at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Fla. Director James Cameron and his producing partner Jon Landau -- the team behind the 2009 cinematic blockbuster "Avatar" -- will serve as creative consultants, working with Walt Disney Imagineering to bring the fantasy world of Pandora and the broader Avatar universe to Disney's parks throughout the world. Ground-breaking at Animal Kingdom, the newest of four theme parks at the city-sized Walt Disney World in Orlando, is planned for 2013. "I'm chomping at the bit to start work with Disney's legendary Imagineers to bring our AVATAR universe to life," Cameron said in a statement announcing the deal Tuesday morning. "Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of AVATAR with an unprecedented sense of reality." Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chairman Jim Gianopulos, whose movie studio financed, marketed and distributed "Avatar," said Disney was a natural choice as a licensing partner because of its global reach and stature. He said the world Cameron envisioned, starting with Pandora and stretching out to include other creatures and settings, is a natural fit for a theme-park experience. "It lends itself very well, not only to subsequent films, but to be imagined and realized in the parks," Gianopulos said. "Yes, it's creative content. But what it really is is an immersive world. And that's what Disney intends to create." Cameron's earlier hit film, "Terminator 2," served as the basis for an attraction at several Universal Studios theme parks. Universal was believed to be interested in creating an "Avatar" 4D movie for its parks. Disney's deal with Cameron grants the entertainment giant exclusive global theme park rights to the "Avatar" franchise. The first film set the box office record for the highest grossing movie, bringing in $2.8 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Cameron and Fox have already announced they are planning two sequels, the first expected in 2014. Tuesday's news comes in response to Universal Studios' success with "Wizarding World of Harry Potter," the themed land based on the popular J.K. Rowling books and Warner Bros. movies. The addition to Universal's Orlando park has boosted attendance and merchandise sales. "Avatar" is also a fantasy film with similar broad appeal to children and adults. Tom Staggs, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a statement, "Its spectacular settings, intriguing characters, imaginative creatures and strong themes of family and loyalty make it a perfect fit for Disney." Disney originally had planned to create a land of mythical creatures like dragons as part of Disney's Animal Kingdom, but those plans never materialized and the land remains undeveloped. Although aliens would seem an unlikely addition to Disney's elaborate zoo, the entertainment conglomerate said the Avatar land will emphsize the film's theme of "living in harmony with nature." Disney has embarked on an aggressive global expansion of its parks in recent years. It is expanding Hong Kong Disneyland with the addition of a Toy Story land, remaking Fantasyland in Orlando and building a 13-acre Cars Land attraction to Disney California Adventure in Anaheim. The company also is planning a new theme park in Shanghai, its first in mainland China.

I really think some artistic licence is at play here. Realistically we are looking at a coaster peaking at 35m (if that). I think Batwing is around 60m tall so Green Lantern will hit only a little higher than midway up Batwing. To me, the roller coaster does look a bit "enhanced" in the pic. Nathan

Hi guys, Last year around this time I asked you all to do a number of different polls etc to discover which rides were your "must-do's" of the Gold Coast parks. To make this process easier (and to not clog things up) please find a link to the 2011 survey. Your answers are appreciated. I would love to compare these results to last years surveys to track any changes among members, and of course, I will post the results here. LINK TO SURVEY Thanks for your input and I look forward to seeing any changes from the last 12 months. PLease note - only the rides and shows listed on the respective official pages have been listed here. No rides or shows specifically aimed at small children have been included. Nathan Edit to add Buzzsaw has not been included because this survey only takes into account rides, attractions, shows and eateries current prior to September school holidays. All items must be listed on the respective official website. Obviously upcharge attractions are also not included. Water parks have not been included this year. This survey will be open for 7 days only.

I actually still havnt seen jttcote.... No real interest... Shrek had its run as well..... I'm not scurrying to the park to see jttcoye and for that reason I can't see it being as big a drawcard as Shrek was . It maybe easier on mw's bottom line ...

I agree. Apart from the name and color I really don't think there will be much to actually tie this coaster to green lantern. Time will tell I know, but I just can't see a storyline or theme realistically coming to.life here. Prove me wrong VRTP

I'll be hitting up Dreamworld next Saturday to ride Buzzsaw. Whose up for a Parkz meetup?

Hi, We did not get to experience the whole Arkham maze, only the entrance corridor and Poison Ivy's lair. Perhaps something big is planned that they wanted to keep under wraps? Inside yesterday we saw Poison Ivy, the Joker and Scarecrow (who was just standing quietly behind me and when I turned around I got a big scare) so without the proper lighting and staging in place it was still an awesome costume and is going to look incredible on the night. Fright Nights Preview 14th September 2011 Warner Bros. Movie World When a preview attendee has a panic attack with the house lights on and only a few scare actors inside, it's proof that Warner Bros. Movie World have upped the anti. This afternoon, park fans from media groups were treated to a sneak peak of Fright Nights 2011 at Warner Bros. Movie World. Upon entering the park, we were handed gift packs to take home. In our packs we were each given an adult diaper (for reasons that would become clearer as the night went on.) Heading behind the Scooby Doo Soundstage we were met outside Soundstage 1 on the Warner Bros. lot by Christophe Broadway, Entertainment Manager of Warner Bros. Movie World. Christophe gave us a little more information about the plans for the night and how Movie World are taking Fright Nights to the extreme in 2011. Christophe explained that tonight we would be experiencing "Set Tours" of the mazes which are still under construction for the big nights in October. Usually heading through this maze in groups of 6, we were led in one long line as a single group through the Saw maze which was out first preview for the night. While Saw is similar to last year, some improvements have been made to the scarezones which had me jump a couple of times. The syringe box was disgusting and you will definitely remember it for a long time. Just across the road in Soundstage 2 sits the Zombie Apocalypse maze. It is a very simple maze and will well work largely on the talented actors they employ. Christophe explained that is a basic copy of the Zombie Apocalypse maze at Wet N Wild Hawaii and it worked so well there they have brought it across to Movie World. The Zombie Apocalypse maze is really well done, filled with smoke and strobe lighting effects. On the night this is going to be the maze I cannot miss. Zombie Apocalypse is an actual maze meaning that there are dead ends and you could seriously get stuck inside. This could mean some pretty scary moments for guests who get disorientated while navigating the chainlink corridors. Going through this maze today with the few scare actors was still pretty scary (The houselights had to be turned on mid maze because another guest was having a panic attack) and the simple setup allows the actors to get into places you do not expect. Arkham Asylum (based on the game) is in the Showstage. This maze is a world first attraction and features some of the well known Batman villains. Movie World were given exact specifications for this maze which had to be followed exactly in order to appease Warner Bros. The maze is exactly like stepping into the Arkham Asylum video game and had the most theming completed of the mazes we experienced tonight. I must admit Scarecrow did give me a major scare, which everyone else found hysterical. As a bonus, we had the opportunity to go back of house at Arkham Asylum and see the maze from a second story. To see the total layout of the maze from this vantage point was really great and I think pin took a really good photo. Christophe has hired around 60 scare actors each night to fill the mazes and the streets of Movie World, and with guest numbers capped each night you can guarantee it's going to sell out quickly. As well as the mazes and rides, definitely not for the faint hearted will be the all new live entertainment shows; the Les Damned de Burlesque in the Main street, Circus of the Damned in the Hollywood Stunt Driver arena, and not to mention the dark and seedy Club Blood, an age restricted bar area with a Gothic DJ, alcohol and Sexy Cage dancers. To secure your ticket purchase a VIP Gold Pass to receive unlimited entry to Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild until 30 June 2012, plus one entry into ‘Fright Nights’ and ‘White Christmas’ events all for only $139.99. Limited tickets are available for the seven nights in October from $29.99 per person. Book now via myfun.com.au or call 133 FUN or check out the Fright Nights FaceBook page for more information. Also discussed today was the possibility of a Fright Pass which would allow access to all nights of Fright Nights in October. This is in the planning stages and may or may not come to fruition. Movie World did not allow filming or photography inside the mazes, but they had their own crew there who were doing some filming. I know I got snapped getting a big scare, so keep an eye out on Movie World's Facebook for that. Thank you so much to VRTP for hosting Parkz and our Facebook friends tonight. It is events like these which really cement our love for our local parks and I cannot wait to be involved in organising the next big event. Nathan

Gumby coaster for the win

It makes sense for it to be a weekday. They are having 50+ guests outside of normal park hours. Show and entertainment crew will be working back to facilitate and I'm sure they might even put a few extra security on. From a financial perspective it makes sense. VRTP seem to be playing a different game when it comes to social media and their competitor has really embraced Facebook. However, VRTP are really getting involved now with the "fansites". Halloween Fright Nights would have been a sell out this year regardless of tonights preview going ahead, so it shows amazing respect by VRTP to offer it. It can only put Parkz in a better position for "Behind the Parkz" style events and its an exciting move by VRTP. It leaves me hopeful that further (more exclusive) events are achievable Nathan

It's been over a year since Shrek closed... Wow that's gone quickly.

Let's hope so dj. There are about 50 people from the facebook groups attending, only a few from Parkz now. After having so much interest here when it was first announced to having 75% of the tickets still without homes is a little disapointing. Ah well, it will be a great night regardless of how much Parkz is represented. Nathan
