Because the Tower of Terror and Giant Drop were added to the park before the current owners (Ardent Leisure) took over. As I said higher up in this thread, it looks like Ardent just aren't interested in spending the money required to build major iconic attractions. Pretty disappointing
-
Then in reality the way I see it is we will never get a massive (or at least large-ish) full circuit roller coaster from Dreamworld. This would have been the year to do it if they were going to do it at all. Not only has it been a LONG wait since their last decent ride but it is also their anniversary AND the board announced a 'major capex plan'. Guess we have to look to Movie World for anything significant (shame they don't have the amount of space available that DW has!)

The Parkz Update Movie World, May 29 2011
GoGoBoy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I love the comment: "It seems front-left of parks is the place to build in 2011!" ... too true! -
So according to the latest Parkz Dreamworld Update, this IS going to be the compact basic version. No extension. Oh Dreamworld, you cheap turds
-
Surprise One thing I am pleased about is DW's decision not to go with another Intamin ride this time, especially after the disaster that was Motocoaster (although Sea World's version was a big improvement). Good to see a bit of manufacturer variety. Hopefully MW will go with a new company too... I certainly have more faith that they will make a good choice regardless
-
I have to admit that regardless of which model they get, I do think this ride will offer a fun/interesting experience. Going from the vertical lift to being immediately upside down will be a very cool sensation. However, I do think if DW decide to go with the basic version, it will be much easier for Movie World to beat them with their next attraction. It seems Village are more willing to spend a few extra bucks ($10 mill plus) and get the bigger, more impressive attractions
-
But isn't the basic version really more of a flat ride rather than a rollercoaster? I personally think if this is Dreamworld's big addition then we can let go of any hope of any real, major rollercoaster or serious expansion of DW or WWW in the future. They just don't seem to want to commit to anything of any significant size and seem determined to stick to their $6 mill budget. Certainly while the current Directors/Management are in place at least
-
It's not insider information or anything. Just speculating about the ride type and hoping it does end up being this extended version. The info regarding the ride (including press release and pics) is from RCDB - http://www.rcdb.com/3185.htm?dt=126&d=170
-
So the official name for this ride type is X Car SkyWheel + Extension. Interesting name. And it is the '+ Extension' that we really want to see. Without that, it's just the loop
-
Yes Gazza exactly what I was thinking. At least, let's HOPE it's themed. And since it's located in Gold Rush Country let's hope it does take on the goldrush theme, which so far it appears it will. Maybe they could even do something like the Saw roller coaster or mystery mine ride whereby the vertical lift is actually a dark section housed in a giant mine shaft with appropriate visual and sound effects
-
If it's the short version (I agree with you guys - it probably will be knowing DW) then it'll just be like one of those travelling super loops. That would be very sad. If it's the long version with the airtime hills etc. then that would be quite acceptable
-
Please let there be more than just the basic layout! Here's hoping for an airtime hill and some other elements. Don't cheap out on us Dreamworld and build another 5 second ride!

Bermuda Triangle is officially closed... Now what?
GoGoBoy replied to reginaphalange's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Interesting idea Gazza. Meanwhile I still find it strange that both Movie World AND Sea World have closed their major dark river ride attractions at the same time - both without any apparent imminent replacement. This will surely be a consideration for families when deciding which passes to purchase. After easily beating Dreamworld in terms of revenue and attendance over the last year, it seems that Village have dropped the ball and the tables have turned. The closure of these 2 rides with no other announcements does nothing to help their cause -
Oh god it's not that awful 'adrenaline' park they were talking about building next to Movie World is it? You know, with Go Karts and other dodgy attractions like that? Then again, it would be listed as more than just a miscellaneous commercial structure
-
They did make SOME attempt to give the Claw an ocean/beach theme - albeit quite weak. It is supposed to be a monster which attacked a beach camping ground. Do they still have the 'community noticeboard' out the front? They also incorporated some beachy theming such as the thatched roofs on the control booths and the landscaping and vegetation
-
Yeah I agree and think it's good that there's now a storyline. The concept seems fine for this style of ride - as long as they actually follow through with theming to match the concept/story. My concern is that if Dreamworld really did only realise at the last second that they should have an ocean theme and related storyline, then there won't have been enough time to design a reasonable level of theming and presentation to match (if at all!)
-
...and your thoughts on that Gazza? Don't you think it's a little strange that the press release was suddenly revised? Please tell me they didn't just change their mind about the theme all of a sudden. Surely it would be obvious that when you build a new ride in a certain area of the park, the ride should match that theme. It's just common theme park sense. Oh hang on, this is Dreamworld we are talking about
-
So I just noticed that it seems Dreamworld altered their initial media release after posting it. If you look at dodge53's quote of the earlier release above, it had absolutely no reference to an ocean theme. This has since been changed. Instead of just saying 'bravely face your mission' they now say 'bravely face your ocean bound mission' and instead of 'rises and dips of Shockwave's vivid green track' they now say 'rises and dips of Shockwave's vivid sea green track'. Surely it's not possible that they read some of our feedback and changed things that quickly? I know it sounds ridiculous - afterall theming would surely have been worked out well in advance. But it does seem strange that they changed the media release. I would have been really disappointed if DW had stuck with the original 'electrical' theme and not related it to the ocean at all. Let's hope the finished product lives up to this promised sea theme and is not just an after-thought in the press release
-
They are saying the ride will be located in Ocean Parade. Okay I really have to stop judging things so quickly before I see the finished product. After learning that this ride will apparently have a 'nautical' theme to fit in with OP, I no longer have any major issue with the name/theme. My concern when I heard the name 'Shockwave' was that it conjures up an image of a travelling portable ride (probably because there are loads of rides named 'Shockwave' on both the travelling circuit and in some dodgy permanent parks) AND it didn't appear to relate to Ocean Parade at all. The Disk 'O ride itself is already so prevalent on the travelling circuit I was thinking the last thing the ride needs is a generic 'carnival' sounding name. From the latest press release it sounds like they will be going to some effort to make this fit with OP and theme it appropriately
-
I don't think so Gazza, because of this: * Family thrill ride launch for June school holidays * Major thrill ride launch for September school holidays By the way I have some stuff to say regarding the HORRIBLE name/theme choice but I've got to head to work. Will have more to say tonight!
-
^ You are on the money there Gazza. People go to Dreamworld for the RIDES. People go to Dreamworld because it's a THEME PARK. The sooner Dreamworld management realises this and stops trying to turn the place into a pseudo entertainment precinct, the better it will be for them. They need to concentrate on delivering what people want - amazing fun rides and attractions
-
Sounds great Tolly. Looking forward to your reports! Especially as I will be making my first trip to Orlando this year. The program you are in sounds amazing and I would have loved to do something like this when I was younger

Bermuda Triangle is officially closed... Now what?
GoGoBoy replied to reginaphalange's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I have no idea why they'd close the attraction down if they weren't going to replace it asap. Sea World, like Movie World, doesn't exactly have a very large selection of rides -
I was thinking a bit more about the closure of this ride and it really strikes me as a strange thing to do. Such a fantastic and iconic ride - absolutely no need to get rid of it. It was perfect for any age - allowing the whole family to ride it. I understand they may have closed it to replace it with something else. But I find it really strange that Movie World does this when one of the biggest issues with Movie World is their lack of attractions. Admittedly they have increased the number of rides over the years, but they could still do with a few more (as the recent TPR trip suggested). They should have left Looney Tunes as it was and built this new ride (if it eventuates) somewhere else
-
So really this ride is like a version of/or similar to Wet 'n' Wild's Surf Rider
