Tropical Cyclone Alfred - Impacts on the Theme Parks

As of 5pm 3rd March, the Village Roadshow Theme Parks have confirmed all of their venues will be closed from Wednesday to Friday (at this stage), in preparation for  Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Doubt it will be long before Dreamworld makes their own announcement. Bit worried about Movieworld however, considering the effects the 2022 floods had on it. A cyclone like this could inundate much of the park, and cause some damage. Areas such as the carpark and entrance and the back of the park are the most likely to take some flooding. Hopefully nothing major that would result in substantial ride damage though.

Same, but I’d say that weather event had more of an impact on DW as it destroyed one of their attractions (Vintage Cars) and they had the wildlife and Tiger Island closed for a week.

Wasn't the vintage cars destroyed in the 2023 tornado? Or was it also damaged during the 2022 floods?

Considering village's staunch opposition to closure in the face of a pandemic, I will give credit where it's due and applaud them for being so proactive in making the call ahead of time to close the parks. I've no doubt Dreamworld will do similarly - it is the smart thing to do.

There is a lot of complacency out there - a bunch of folk thinking "oh it won't get this far south" or "it won't come this far in land" and these are the people who grew up in SEQ and have never seen a cyclone this far south.

...and on the flip side the amount of people flipping out and buying up all the "milk sandwich" supplies is ridiculous.

Be prepared, not panicked.

It's late because VRTP annouced closures on Monday, and the announcement being so close to landfall will make it harder for people with limited day tickets to reschedule. Just saying VRTP really took the initiative on this one.

If people were still considering visiting the Gold Coast up until DW posting that they were closing, that level of stupidity is on them. Commonsense would say, don't visit due to the forecast, not what theme park announces their closure last...

Albeit based on “worst” scenario (which itself is only estimated given there has been no system like this impacting the GC in 50+ years when none of these areas were built up), these are the flood maps released by GCCC today which shows potential for some major inundation at SW.

Yeah I don't think there's any wisdom in anything (show, theme park, or any other event) going ahead in the face of a cyclone that has inched closer to the gold coast by the hour (this morning's track map has it somewhere over southern brisbane \ logan, whereas yesterday it was northern end of Bribie Island).

Just because village made the decision earlier, doesn't make dreamworld late. they both made it in advance of the system's approach, and did it at a time where the data made sense.

My organisation advised yesterday afternoon that all our offices in SEQ would close today. I've seen some private schools and bus companies also close today - however public schools remain open. I've seen a lot of people crying foul over schools staying open but there's many critical workers out there preparing for this event that wouldn't be able to go to work if their kids weren't at school. Today's forecast has wind and rain, but nothing is forecast outside 'usual' summer storm parameters, so schools being open today makes sense - however i've no doubt in my mind they'll be closed tomorrow. A lot of other things will probably announce closures today, and the disaster press conference today is probably going to have a lot more information now that the system tracking is close enough to reasonably predict landfall location.

Wherever you are - stay safe. Your family comes first. possessions can be replaced, but you can't. Don't enter floodwater - even if your 4x4 is modded to the max. Take the time today to secure anything outside that could potentially fly away (and remember that the winds are a lot stronger so heavier objects can fly too), stay inside, away from windows, and don't go outside when the wind stops - you may just be inside the eye. Wait until you've confirmed with official sources that it has passed. Don't run generators in enclosed spaces. boil tap water before drinking until declared safe by water authorities. Turn on location services on your phone, and tag your location on social media posts.

If you need help with flooding or storm damage, call the SES on 132 500. If anyone's life is in danger, call 000.

That flood map of movieworld and wet n wild is wrong.

Saltwater creek is known for extreme flash flooding, right down the side of movieworld and actually through wet n wild BOH and across the front of outback spectacular. Both streams converge in the far corner of the movieworld carpark as the creek travels under the highway and heads left through helensvale and eventually drains into the coomera river.

Im extreme rain events movieworld can experience flooding in the park due to the storm water drains backing up as they cant flow into a swollen creek. The security bridge (and the old security entrance near green lantern/rivals) often floods over multiple times a year. The saving grace is it can go down very quickly when rain eases, but the problem with a cyclone is extended rainfall expected, high falls of 500-700mm are possibilities through those parts of the coast right into saturday.

well according to GCCC, those maps show the worst case scenario...

Yeah, but it doesnt match their own flood mapping overlay which isnt event specific. The only way they dont match is if they dont think its going to rain enough to flood the creek (thats a pretty big gamble because the creek rises meters after thundestorms). It used to catch out staff who were parked in the corner of the carpark closest to the tech services building.

If we get the rain predicted, its not going to remain a small stream.
