Water Park for Perth

Good on them, I hope it's a success and the rest of the plans move forward. The attempted hype is a bit of a joke though; calling an aqua play structure a new theme park, and saying we're trying to be like Disney are both pretty far out things to be saying about something so modest. Even though it's totally unfair, it is funny to compare this to what's going on with WnW Sydney.

Little puff piece on Outback Splash from the 'WA Today' website.

http://www.watoday.com.au/entertainment/about-town/perths-new-waterpark-makes-an-outback-splash-20140108-30h8b.html

Also saw a couple of other water parks on the way back from Margaret River today. They were Escape at the Cape Fun Park:

and King Carnival Rides in Mandurah.

King Carnival has been advertising quite a bit on Perth television. They are located on an estuary and have some kind of water commando course, mini golf and a collection of flat rides, such as a Super Skate, Ferris Wheel and a Flying Flume Ride that looks pretty deadly (check out the video below).

It looks like Outback Splash is extending its season until June 2 (WA's foundation day) as well! It's open every day of the school holidays and Wed-Sat after that. They are boasting heated waterslides, apparently (plus they get to charge $10 more for entry).

It is a long weekend in Perth, this weekend. Despite an early shower, the weather was a lot warmer than yesterday. As certain other parks were closed, I decided to visit The Maze.

First up, it's a very pretty little park and the Outback Splash water playground has settled in really well in the setting they have provided. The water was off when I took the pictures, but they were still open and the water came on a short time afterwards, when people wanted to use the slides.

The timber maze was fun, but it's looking a little worse for wear. A larger hedge maze is also a part of their expansion plans. They have plenty of room for their expansion and they've already started to cannibalise their old Frisbee golf course (including what looks like a cabin in the woods - theme for a water slide perhaps?).

The theming for the water playground seems a little at odds with the name - Outback Splash. More like Aztec Splash, with its Mexican and South American images. From the Adobe coloured change room to its iguanas and pyramids, the name Outback Splash only really describes the location of this isolated property. The future plans look really exciting and the staff member I talked to thinks that stage two might be ready by the next season.

On the way home, I also visited Hilary's Boat Harbour, the home of AQWA and The Great Escape fun park. Their waterslides were operating and happy screams could be heard emanating from within.

I had lunch at The Maze today. The Iguana Burger was quite nice.. despite its name. Outback Splash was fenced off and being cleaned in preparation for the coming season. There's currently no sign of phase two. I also popped by the abandoned Atlantis Marine Park earlier in the morning. It's surprising how many people still visit that place (I saw about a dozen paying their respects). My full report is on my blog:

The Maze has re-branded itself as Outback Splash at the Maze. Their new park map shows the next stage of their expansion, most of which is tagged for 2015. This includes a kids water slides area as well as a King Cobra. Apparently, Dave Hughes was visiting the park the other day when the temperature was in the mid-thirties.

Yeah, it looks exciting. Perth has yet to get a truly decent water slide.

It's early days for Outback Splash as it's still just a very large water playground, but the King Cobra and the other new attractions (like a hedge maze and the Cube) will make a visit much more worthwhile.

I remember seeing king kobra on extreme water parks. Looks pretty intense.

Heard about this one last night. Apparently, they were copping some flack on their Facebook Page for not shutting the slide sooner.

A popular slide at a Perth water park has been closed after a five-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries when he came off it.

Outback Splash said yesterday that its blue slide would be closed until after an "operational review".

Mason McDonald, who landed on concrete, was treated by patrons at the Bullsbrook water park before an ambulance took him to Joondalup hospital on Sunday. He has been transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was stable last night.

Mason's mother Hayley posted on Facebook last night that her son had fractures to his skull.

"Our son Mason is slowly improving and has been to hell and back as have we, his family," she wrote. "He is alive only as a result of the multiple medical trauma teams who treated him at two major hospitals in Perth. He has fractures to his skull and other injuries as a result of his fall from height on to concrete.

"We are unsure of how his memory, speech, seizures etc etc will develop over the next few months. We have many specialist medical depts working with him.

"He is unable to return to school for the foreseeable future.

"Thank you for everyone's ongoing support. It means a lot to Mason and our whole family."

Former nurse Marian McCrory was at Outback Splash with her children for a St John Ambulance cadets end-of-year party when she saw the boy flung from the slide "like a little ragdoll through the air".

"It was a good height where he came off, about the height of my shoulders," Mrs McCrory said.

"He came off at one of the bends, probably the last bend."

It is understood Mason's father was riding with him.

Mrs McCrory and two other St John officers tended to the boy.

"His eyes were glazed over," she said. "It was about 15 seconds before we had a response. I believe he was unconscious."

Outback Splash owner Paul Woodcock said last night he was gutted for Mason's family.

Mr Woodcock said the blue slide would be closed until the cause of the accident was identified and rectified.

"I'm horrified it happened," he said. "I have kids myself and if the cause is not rectifiable, we will permanently pull the slide."

Mrs McCrory said her eight-year-old son complained before the incident that the slide was not working properly.

Some people are very vague with their definition of water park. Here's a development at Elizabeth Quay in Perth where they've described a collection of water fountains as a water park. It looks like a good idea. Perhaps they'll project images against the water like they do in Singapore or Disneyland.

Its slightly of topic.

Anyone know what they are making? (This is being built at King Carnival)

Hey TD

Paid King Carnival a quick visit, today, on my way back from Peel Zoo. The picture you posted looks to be an enclosed trampoline type thing. The place was pretty quiet. It's very old school carny-like. I had a quick snoop around and could not see the water coaster that used to live there. It seems to have been replaced with a large inflatable slide. Apparently, the park is celebrating its sixtieth birthday. Yay! Now only if they had a ride to match their Transformer.

If Adventure World can't stay open, then why can Luna Park that has a 100 year old wooden coaster that is certainly prone to weather?

Hi Jacob

In answer to your question, Luna Park does not have any wet product. By contrast Adventure World has around 50% of its product being wet which seriously deters guests visiting as soon as the mercury drops below 27 degrees. If you look at Adventure Park in Geelong which has a similar mix to ours you will see their season is actually shorter than ours and for that reason. Thanks for raising the question though.

CEO Adventure World.

Thanks for the reply Mark (although somewhat late haha)

Interesting to see 27 degrees in there, Perthians have certainly acclimatised to warmer weather! Since it was so long ago that I posted this, I completely understand the reasoning now.
