Given the amount of dumb things I've read in the past 13 days, I struggle to even vaguely comprehend that we can go another 353 days without another dumb idea. In fact I give it less than 24 hours...

Why don't we remove the motocoaster, move the vintage cars back, and add a zipline from eureka to the rapids?

Actually I'm all for an upcharge vs a SBNO attraction.

I'm actually thinking about it and I really don't think I'd hate a Zip Line all the way from Gold Rush down to the Wildlife Area. You'd have to raise the departure point up quite a bit because both stations are probably the same height at present.

But me personally, I would pay to ride it if they put it in.

Sorry Alex but this 'dumb' idea actually has me interested for once.

No issues - you've got your opinion and i've got mine (I'd probably pay to ride it too). When the choices are SBNO vs Upcharge, sure - we'd love the park to install something in a site rather than leave the old ride there to rot.. but would that be your decision every time?

What if every time the park retired an old attraction, they proposed the option of either leaving it there, or  installing a new upcharge with dreadful capacity - the park would become another Adrenaline Park.

A zipline is awesome in the right setting, and standing on it's own it'd probably generate some good revenue. I enjoy them and have ridden several around the world in unique and interesting settings... However looking at the failed attempt at WnW, I don't want any of the parks to go down the same road and make the same mistakes.

There are too many attractions in Dreamworld (that don't cost extra) competing with an expensive upcharge. The ones i've ridden have been in tourist trap areas with unique settings where everything else was just as expensive and it was choose your experience, not choose whether you play for free or pay for play.

Especially since - as you say - the platform would need to be elevated to accommodate the gravity needed to make it the whole way (and compensate for the rope sag) - Dreamworld would need to drop some cash to retrofit the platforms to suit.

To be honest, I did give it serious thought. I even thought about raising the platforms at BOTH ends, so you could buy a one-way, or a return journey and go both ways. THAT would be cool.

But let's be realistic (and i'm not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but laying it out so others will understand too):

  • With safety briefing, fitting and loading, you're dealing with at least a 2:1 staff ratio (one at each end) so its labour intensive
  • Per rope, you're getting one person about every 5 minutes, so 12PPH is your theoretical maximum
  • You'll never hit your theoretical maximum because only a small percentage of people will pay the exhorbitant cost to ride that you have to charge just to justify the number of staff working on it and the cost to build it in the first place
  • you therefore won't cover your costs, and close the attraction in all but peak holiday periods where you're more likely to be busy
  • The attraction will then operate only seasonally (surfrider? vintage cars?) when it's busy enough to justify the staff - perhaps 12 weeks of the year?
  • You're then left with an effectively SBNO attraction for 40 weeks of the year. Not much better than the 52 weeks the Skylink was sitting for, plus its taking up real estate that a fully fledged attraction could use all year round.

Well in away I can understand why the Skylink and Eureka won't removed completing as the rides are really well built into there areas not like the cyclone was for years before Whitewater World was built you would most likely require to close the Thunder River Rapids, Buzzsaw and part of Dreamworld Corroboree in order to completely remove the rides and for what. I wouldn't personally see the need in closing 2 very popular rides to remove something which isn't doing any harm for people  who didn't know there was a chairlift station in gold rush country they wouldn't know about it.

Very valid points Alex.

To answer your question no, I wouldn't always think it was good. I'd never even thought of it until you mentioned it and it go me to thinking that I actually feel one at DW in that location would be very cool.

It needs to be a proper zip line, not the ridiculous effort at WnW.

You would need to do the proper market research and work out the return vs the cost but I'd be all for it. DW has enough attractions that justify why an upcharge is ok with me.

Not that you get the dollars or numbers but I sat and worked out how much money the Vegas attraction was pulling in per hour and it was a scary high figure.

how about a zipline that drops you right into a eureka mine cart than you ride that out?

BEST IDEA EVA!

If that's the wet n wild zipline your talking about, it's safe to say it would need to be over a mile long plus high price entrance fees to a rival park (add 10$ extra to sneak in some profit... and no, those tickets are non transerrable...)

What, in your opinion would be a 'proper' zip line?

Look i'm not against Dreamworld putting in an upcharge - thats not why i'm against it - but it would take up a lot of land that could be used in other ways. small footprint upcharges - like Redline, the climbing wall, flowrider - I have no problem with these because they generally use space that isn't (and won't) be used for other things (although FlowRider is really in a bad spot now that everything has grown around it) (i'm pretty sure the climbing wall is gone now too).

But this is a massive footprint, and therefore it needs to be far better than anything else they've got - and i don't think it is.

As for Las Vegas Zipline - I mentioned this earlier:

Vegas is the quintessential tourist trap, where all your entertainment costs money (and all your drinks are free) - So you're not choosing free vs. upcharge. Everything is an upcharge... its a question of WHICH upcharges you want to pay for - Their zip is pretty cool flying through fremont street, so its going to be an attraction to see a side of vegas you can't see any other way.

Whilst flying through the trees at Dreamworld would be cool, it's not flying under a canopy roof between a mile of neon casinos cool. For that reason I don't see as many people riding it - especially when there are so many other rides and experiences at no extra cost.

If Dreamworld were to look at the Vegas zipline as proof the concept would work - they'd be set up to fail.

But you're right - the park would do it's research and would at least be reasonably satisfied it was viable before installing... I'm sure there are some - what other parks have ziplines through fairly plain bush type settings?
