The ride itself actually is in a shed behind the towers. The ride simulates being in a room that turns upside down, simulating a paranormal experience. The illusion that is pulled off quite convincingly with some clever technical trickery.

...When a branch does fall, and a family member does die, the Earl becomes very scared, and orders the oak to be chained up, so that no branches can fall, and conducts experiments on the fallen branch in an attempt to break the curse.
