Roxy "Adventures in the Fourth Dimension"
MickeyD replied to Park Addict 93's topic in Theme Park Discussion
with a little prompting I could just about recite this show word for word - having seen/worked the venue during the early days many times over. The preshow videa was siimply done by the late great Ernest Borgnine talking about 3D movies and their relevance during the 50s and 60's.. Today at the Roxy we were going to explore the '4th' dimension - which is Time. You then head into the theatre and using technology to splice current actors with old film footage a story is told of how two kids walk off a tour on the WB's lot and meddle with a 'movie' time machine developed by a mad professor.. A pretty dreadful story but not a bad effort for MW's 1st 3D adventure (that was shot and made specifically for the park BTW). It was just a film with no in theatre effects other than really good sound and the screen back then was a much smaller square box shape - at least half the size of the current monster that was installed for Marvin. These screens were imported from the USA at a pretty big cost. BTW 3D screens are Silver - not white.. It helps reduce the glare and bring out the colour and picture with better clarity:) -
I love the 'laser man' effect twirling the light like a couple of fire sticks.. very cool

The Rainbow was one of the better sideshow alley offerings in it's day. Half of the thrill was sharing the fun with the other passengers aboard. I certainly don't lose sleep over it's disappearance and as much as I loved my time enjoying the dusty carni rides when young they just don't do it for me anymore. Still, if I do go to the Ekka I can't resist a few turns on the latest spin and spew offerings. I would love to see a jumbo version of the classic Wave Swinger developed - one of my all time favourite midways

I think it would make sense to keep the Tune Ride as a water dark ride but I have a feeling WVTP's have quite radically different plans for this space. Personally I believe they should re-imagine it as the "Looney Tunes Adventure" keeping a major attraction for the all important Cartoon character franchise but with a whole new ride system and experience.. Surely they can see the logic in doing this? I am a little concerned that Bugs and Pals are gunna get the boot in favour of something that doesn't have the same kind of ongoing upkeep expenses that the LTRR does. Trouble is NO other Theme will have the same staying power as these iconic legends My bet is that whatever the new ride system is that goes in there it will most certainly be more thrilling but perhaps less immersive and maybe not very fitting for the area, atleast as it currently stands anyway

Sea World 2010 (Castaway Bay & Antarctic Penguins)
MickeyD replied to themeparkgc's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I'm loving the theming and landscaping! Overall this is a great complement to the Park's previously under-utilised back corner and together with the Penguins these new additions should help balance the flow of crowds -
^nicely put Joz. I am sure the reality of what will be is bound to underwhealm given some of the spectacular expectations being thrown around out there.. Can I just say this whole topic has been launched by 1 person saying that ''they can tell you'' about not one but 2 big Intamin attractions are coming DW's way for it's 30th. surely history has shown you should never believe everything you hear, maybe just some of it
-
I hope to love what they have in store for the area - it has its heart and soul embedded at the root (-haha he said 'root') and with a theme that has played so much quiet success over the years.. The Looney Tunes river ride was Woody's sentimental favourite of the Park's original design and I sincerely hope it is treated with the same respect in helping sculpt it's future
-
the only 2 things I am mildly excited about from the list so far are the looping slides and the Penguins.. I really do hope that what will be added to the list will be something truly big.. MW IMO is overdue but clearly they are holding off for the Park's big 20 next year. Areas of MW to keep an eye on over the next 18 months: - Batman simulator - Looney Tunes River Ride - Western corner/old show stage area - Lethal Weapon An educated guess but I reckon I am at least 50% on the money here:)

I think it's a shame that the only thing people seem to be suggesting as a worthy replacement to the show is a clone of some other 3d show from far away. Not to mention ridiculous suggestions of Disney shows that will never appear anywhere other than in the hands of the Mouse Shrek4d is the 1st copy 3d attraction to come to MW (granted a dam good one) - the 2 before it were made specifically for MW parks, Marvin had it's debut at MW Germany and with it's show FX it was a superior show for the time. I'm really not keen to see another off the shelf 3D show come to MW if it means something inferior will replace what we already have. From what I've heard we can not only expect 1 but 3 of these.. awesome
-
im guessing option 1
-
flouro tubes hey? wow! Still, it should be a nice change for the ride and breathe new life into something that has been such a big drawcard for the Park for so long. I wonder if MW will try and hit back with those rumoured Lethal Weapon train replacements?

Well in Theme Park speak, yes 4D refers to an immersive 3D experience that involves Theatre goers with elements such as motion, light, touch, smoke etc.. But in reality; - The 1st dimension is Height - The 2nd dimension is Width - The 3rd dimension is Depth - The 4th dimension is Time - The 5th dimension is the space between Depth and Time otherwise known as the Twilight Zone Some of you may remember the original Roxy Theatre presentation? It was a film about 4D, but (by today's understanding) with no 4D features.. Gee I hope that's not the standard that lies ahead for this attraction? Joz, your post has got me mildly worried

I am suprised that after Movie Magic went the way of the Dodo that they didn't install automatic doors in the Roxy. This has been on the theatre's wish list for years and surely they have plenty spare now? If it wasn't for cost I would also love to see the seating raised inside rather than the terrible flat floor forum style way it has always been. Dress the interior up and give it that classic Hollywood premier Theatre look! I don't understand why others are making a big deal if this information is true and leaked? No-one other than enthusiasts on this site are really going to care and if word did get out that MW was indeed considering a new attraction then surely this is potentially good word of mouth press? Not sure about the Theme though.. I wonder would this be something to do with that terrible Brendan Fraser film? I hope not. Shrek 3D is a classic attraction and just as good as many other world class 3D shows. When you consider the Theatre's near 20 year life, Adventures in the 4th Dimension ran for the 1st 7 years, Marvin the Martian's debut into the world of CG3D brought a new wall to wall screen and a few theatre FX, also running for 7 years and Shrek's motion theatre seats and many more theatre fx have kept park goers happy for the past 5 years. I hope the equipment currently used in the Theatre isn't part of the current lease and disappears along with this great show.. Sooner or later it will be a shame to see it go but these shows always have their life spans

Maths aside June 3rd is WBs Movie World's big day.. We're already into another 12 months till we hit the Park's big 20 No doubt about it, MW has revolutionalised the Theme Park industry in Australia so for 2011, expect something big

ok so do we know if these Critters will infact be King Emperor Penguins? I'd be interested to know how they can effectively simulate their environment -
The Parkz Update Dreamworld, June 2010
MickeyD replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion
the water jets on the Rapids are a nice touch albeit a little unappropriate for this time of year! The mine ride building is looking terrible and with the steel frame protruding through the exterior it looks like a rotten old turd brown cloth that's been thrown over something to cover it up! I wonder how much longer they plan to just leave it all there sitting, rotting away BAD SHOW DW!!! -

WARNER BROS. MOVIE WORLD CELEBRATES DC COMICS 75TH ANNIVERSARY!

and for that matter has anyone even seen so much as an advertisement for it? Living in Brisbane all i see on the telly are ad's promoting DW's holiday events -
The Looney Tunes River Ride has a very special place in my heart. When 1st visiting the Park back in the day it was only 1 of 2 rides (the other Gremlins) and the scale of the attraction was my first reminder of a Disneyesque style ride landing here in Australia. I was so takin by it, I just had to work there one day!! I got my wish and having also worked many years as a presenter and then Supervisor of that attraction, I know it like the back of my hand and would regularly traverse the moat (prior to flooding the place daily) and groom the furries, collect rubbish and report damage, wear & tear. Whilst in my role at the Park I was festidious about attention to detail when it came to the presentation of the rides and this is one thing that just makes me so angry to see that many of the same people (now in higher positions) just seem to turn a blind eye to problems today. Sadly I think the Tune Ride's days are numbered and the rumours are indeed true. It is one of the signature attractions of Warner Bros Movie World and a place where Warner Bros. iconic Looney Tunes Characters come to life, or at least once upon a time they did anyway. Personally I am expecting the Tune Ride will close for good this year and I hope at the very least the plans are to maintain the same character representation when the site re-opens as a new ride for the Park's 20th Anniversary next year and NOT some fly-by-night theme. Looney Tunes are absolute classics in their own right and one of the park's most valuable assets. Surely Management know this
-
someone should write an article for the Gold Coast Bulletin about this. Maybe that's just the wake up call they need?
-
oh that's just pathetic to hear.. I am glad to have worked in the Parks during the 'glory' years when regular maintenance requests were logged & processed for everything from fresh paint to resurfacing. Nowadays (like Alex said) it seems that once an attraction opens and as the years roll by they fall into a state of neglect waiting for the day to come when they finally reach their ultimate demise. I am disappointed to hear that mature members of VTP senior management seem to be turning a blind eye to the importance of maintaining and upgrading what they already have. Some of them have been a part of the business since the early years. They know better and can carry enough clout across the table to stand up for what they believe in, if they really wanted to that is. This ignorance will not go unnoticed by the general public and I only hope guest services are receiving a flood of complaints over so much that has deteriorated in recent years.

well I suppose it would be if it were true
-
Haha I nearly fell for that one and started writing a big nasty rant... nice:)

New Parks overseas and how it may affect us
MickeyD replied to MickeyD's topic in Theme Park Discussion
The 3 movie parks I mentioned are all set for Korea (a country) -not Asia the continent where there are quite a few more parks (including more movie ones). My whole point of discussionis the impact they most likely will have on our Parks in Australia and how our Park's will deal with such a change Scott I think you will probably find you can get a holiday to Singapore for less than the cost of a gold coast equivelant and depending on the time of year you travel, probably even considerably less - and closer too.. So what Holiday would you choose? Having worked in the travel, tourism and leisure industry for almost 20 years I think I have a pretty good idea of what's going on. Of course you're entitled to your opinion. I also have a pretty good idea of what our Park's have up their sleeves down the track and don't hold your breath, for anything huge atleast not for the short term ianyway. Having been a part of the MW crew for almost decade, I guess you gain an understanding of the companies needs, objectives & philoophies - It's a VERY reactive business. I'm not bitching as you put it - specifically I only care for the success of these businesses and like so many others out there I only want for them to be in as good a shape as they possibly can be. If people out there are just happy to accept them becoming mediocre to reflect the apathy of the average paying visitor then so be it
