  1. this article was in the daily telegraph a few days back and for the record the $72 million refurbishments has hit the $100 million mark. Luna Park reopens, just for fun By NICOLETTE BURKE and SHOBA ROA January 6, 2004 THE famous smile at Luna Park has been whitened, the rouge reapplied and the rides rebuilt – all in anticipation of the park's opening within weeks. After $100 million in renovations, the historic site is going back to its roots as a traditional fairground, with a carnival atmosphere. The park's director Warwick Doughty said 600 staff would be hired in the coming weeks and workers would be trained to operate the rides in anticipation of the March launch. "The aim is to retain the original 1935 amusement park and introduce new streams of business which will make sure it is not a drain on the public purse," Mr Doughty said. The heritage-listed dance hall overlooking the Harbour, the Crystal Palace, has been renovated as a function venue, with the 6500 globes on the building replaced. Coney Island will maintain its original sandy-coloured walls and will have a new icecream parlour at the front. The amusement park was closed in 1996. It occasionally has opened since for Christmas and New Year's Eve events and school holidays. The Big Dipper, which caused much disquiet in the Milsons Point community over sound levels, was sold to Dreamworld on the Gold Coast for $5.5 million and renamed the Cyclone. Its space is occupied by a new arena to house circus and pantomime performances and will house 2000 people under a bright yellow and red big top tent. Mr Doughty said he was confident people would be attracted to the new-look park, especially as entry is free. The State Government continues to own the site, with a 40 year lease granted to Metro Edgley, a joint venture of the Metro theatre group and event promoter Edgley International.
  2. luna park sydney was on channel 10 news at 5:55 today, it showed the new park with details on the refurbishments, in the background it showed coney island, the new luna circus room, the tango ride and men working on the almost complete underground carpark. It also showed some of the organs and musical boxes that will be in the park. One which was the carousels organ which was made in 1920. It was really interesting to see how well luna park is making progress.
  3. has anybody been to jamberoo and been to this new attraction? does anyone know any links to show photos of this attraction? is it any good?
  4. has anybody noticed that on all wonderland advertisments, whether it is a poster a commerical etc. The beastie always appears in these advertisments. It's weired, this may get people to believe that there is another roller coaster. Wonderland soemtimes advertises more than what they have.
  5. there is no excuse for closing down little wonders land. What excuse is that the park is too big. come on compared to parks around the world, Wonderland is small. People are lazy or wonderland couldn't support the needs to run that area of the park anymore.
  6. we have the money to open theme parks, but not the support we need to open them. Like i said and it did make sense, Australia is very small in population and if we were like America having hundreds of parks, they will all shut down becasue no one would go becasue there are too many theme parks to go to. Like we have only what about 7 -10 main theme parks in Australia, and they are going strong because many people go to these parks. The more theme parks the less people spend at one park. The less theme parks the bigger the park attandance is in one day. This is no opinion its a fact.
  7. the problem with australia is, that its not the money to open theme parks. its just australia doesnt have a large population only a mere 20 million for the tourism industry. we dont have enough people to attend many theme parks. only a few theme parks will do australia.
  8. have a good christmas and a happy new year, im practically out of this forum for the holiday season, ill be back in a few weeks time. ciao
  9. what i dont understand is that if they will never reopen the bestie, i dont why its still standing. Seriously they will eventually open the land.
  10. and you too are right on that. Luna park can offer million dollar views. i remember for the year 2000 new years eve night in the city. my friends went to luna park that night and booked out i think like a crystal ballroom. they payed for the room and the people to go in including an additional $100 per person to enter the park for that night. how exciting it would be right next to the bridge, but anyway im going off topic now. wonderland is a developing well is developed but like you said IMO for wonderland to be a world class park all they need is a world record ride or even just a teriffic roller coaster. IMO dreamworld is already a world class park movie world is still developing theres very minimum rides. sea world just sucks and wet 'n' wild is a world class water park.
  11. actually its surprising to know how few people know there is a luna park in sydney. no body knows about it. and did anyone notice just about half an hour ago they showed the tango ride at luna park on that movie on channel 10 right now!
  12. well the people that owned the park when it first opened where australians and wanted to open the biggest theme park in the sountehrn hemisphere located in sydney and so it was made. the man that owned never stopped building rides and finally the space probe was added. that man sold the park to a mayaysian company and im not sure who owns it now. In other words the people that own the park must not have enough money to expand the park therefore sold off land to make more money. all we need is a lot more time for something new to happen. i know 8 years is alot but think what may happen when they finally build something. Imagine if a company like six flags owned wonderland what they could do. the park is beautifully landscaped, you cant say that the theming is crap because its better than dreamworlds scenery and the build up on some rides like the theming on the space probe is mad. just wait i know that something big will happen in a few years to come.
  13. get it through your head, its like a non stop festival, people wont travel for something like that, i realise that if you do spend the day at the city people might go to luna park but its weired to think that luna park can get more popularity. people arent going to pay $30 to ride a few carnival rides and a lousy replicare of a wild mouse.

  16. well if your in sydney you should have noticed many radio advertisments, newspapaer coupons and also many TV commercials. last night they showed the commerical about 4 times within the hour. ive got to tell you its pretty convincing, the park looks mad on TV they showed the space probe, demon and other rides and the new tiger cubs at wonderland sydney. i think this is great advertising for christmas for families who dont know what they want to do for fun and suddenly come accross this add on TV. im thinking this park will be packed out this boxing day if anything.
  17. on the luna park website if you go to history you will find all the faces there. http://www.lunaparksydney.com/general/history.html
  18. if yous people continue to go to wonderland again and again of course it gets boring, its like watchine the same movie 100 times. i used to always go to wonderland and i was bored of going to much now im looking forward to go becasue its been almost 1 year. if people have never visited wonderland before i think they would be excited to go. wonderland is a great experience but not for going again and again and again.
  19. its time to go... ned kellys get away maybe its for the better, i think that if all these low excitment ride other than the wizards fury and beastie went it would provide more room for better attractions in the future.
  20. but more than ever i would prefer i ride thats more exciting than intense, wipe out is high in excitment and intensity, but when i saw this delirium ride i rekon its a must go on ride, it looks very exciting and out of the ordinary. well i mean its exciting as in just heading back and forth on a pendalum like a pirate ship it goes upside down and spins whilst swinging. its interesting.
  21. i was really referring to the coney island building, its massive and boring, who needs a massive building with a few mirrors and replicars of the same slides inside and a few moving floors. i agree with you go boi, but what i do disagree is the tango and the ranger, they are classics, i love the tango its a very long ride and it goes forwards and backwards and it make me laugh becasue its hard to get away from the person on the outer edge becasue of the force. the ranger provides some thrill with at least going upside down, i dont like the rainbow for the fact that it provides really no entertainment to me IMO.
  22. get rid of the crappy coney island and turn that into an indoor coaster like the scooby doo spooky coaster, also add in a space probe ride, very thrilling less space and fun! luna park isnt aiming to beat wonderland, they know they can't and luna park is heritage, its been there for ages, its reawlly there like a museum. and they cant close down becasue of the ghost train memorial.
  23. no reason for this post its just to make my 100th post. finally, just add the number of these posts to my old name boycotta and it should be like 200.
  24. its good to see that wonderland is at least making the effort to improve the park with no rides. it seems refurbishing them is the closest we will get to a new ride. and then in years to come this so called roller coaster everyone gets excited about is the reopening of the beastie. lol. it sounds so true!
  25. does anyone knoe how the fire occured, was it an electrical fault or i was thinking the sparks on the conveyorbelt to the top had something to do with it but i think its a bit far fetched. so waht really happened?
