Disney to build park in Shanghai

It seems as though that Shanghai will be the next location after Hong Kong to recieve a Disney theme park.

Disney to Open Shanghai Theme Park in 2012 1 August 2005 (CHINA KNOWLEDGE PRESS) Aug. 1, 2005 (Bloomberg) - Walt Disney Co. will open a theme park in Shanghai in 2012, the Hong Kong Economic Times said, without identifying the source of its information. The company will start designing the park next year, the Chinese-language paper said. The construction will begin in 2008 and the park will open in 2012, the paper said. Disney is close to finishing a $3.5 billion theme park in Hong Kong, which is scheduled to open in September this year. The Shanghai park will be built on a 500-hectare site in Pudong East, three times bigger than the one in Hong Kong, the paper said. No hotel is planned for Shanghai, it said. A group of officials from Shanghai visited the Hong Kong site two weeks ago, the paper said. Staff in charge of the management of Hong Kong Disneyland will be relocated to Shanghai at the end of the year, it said. 8 times the post mentioned that this is what the paper had said. Either grade 4 writing, or trying to not look like idiots if they're wrong. Still, this park has been on the cards for a while now has it not?

There was a period a few years ago when Disney stated clearly along the lines of we are building two new parks in Asia - Hong Kong then Shanghai. Somewhere down the track (around the time of the whole SaveDisney fiasco) it was changed to yeah... there's a chance we might build a park in Shanghai. I have a feeling it was always 100% confirmed, but Disney had to change their minds. Let's just hope that we see something a little more substantial than what is going into Hong Kong right now. Even Hong Kong plus Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain would probably balance things out enough for it to be considered a full park. I'd doubt that they go ahead without any Disney hotels as the article suggests. The resort element of Disney parks is almost crucial to their success.

Don't take that article too seriously, Firstly: the source is unnamed or unknown and, Second: i have read various posts and articles from all over (the net) claiming that Disney are not commiting to anymore parks in mainland Asia till they know if Hong Kong is a success. Re: Screamscape - Industry News, Disney (7/12/05). Almost forgot to mention that every Disney park has a hotel.

Hmmm, China ey. This country is becoming a dangerous super-power (lol, becoming), now with these new theme parks, there will be no stopping them. On the other side, this news dissapoints me, because it seems this means no theme park for good ol Sydney...
