Gold Coast theme parks shut as COVID-19 restrictions mount
First on the chopping block - everyone who said it was just a flu everyone who said these restrictions were a massive overreaction I do note that that wonderful user appears to have disappeared, and I for one thank our moderator overlords.

That's like saying you want half a circumcision. You either do it, or you don't. Closing some spaces will just push others to the remaining places open. Because this is Parkz.

Yes ok - but you're taking a shot at the PM because QLD schools are still open? I'm not a fan of Scotty from Marketing, but Schools, Hospitals, Ambulances, Cruise Ship Port Authorities - they're all state government controlled. Our states are all sovereign bodies who are free to legislate as they see fit. Our multi-level government means things are shared across the levels. As for statistics - 97% of statistics are made up to suit the argument of the person making them, and that's a fact.

the sad part is, most people don't pay attention to their super until they near retirement, and by then, it's too late. If you're not at work over the next few weeks, explore the online services of your super fund and do a little research.

I've never seen a more apt self-description anywhere on the internet. A lot of people seem to have 'heard' a lot of things from 'somebody'. Seriously, if it isn't .gov.au or who.int, you probably want to check the sources and reliability of the information right now.

Gold Coast theme parks shut as COVID-19 restrictions mount
i'm very glad they've finally been shutdown, but i'm annoyed that their statements refer to them 'making a decision' to close the parks. BULLSHIT. they closed because they were forced to by the increased restrictions. if the government hadn't included them, they'd still be out there explaining to everyone why the current rules don't apply to them. I saw someone call Bikash out about comments he made 2 months ago about how everyone was blowing it out of proportion. He called them an idiot and said it was a different time. Crap. it was the time to act. the only actions our GC parks took is because they were forced to do so by public sentiment or government regulation. Make no doubts about it.

Coronavirus and theme parks
There's probably a difference between periodic payments towards what is technically an 'annual pass' versus a swim school that has a price per lesson or pack of lessons that has a quantifiable value per lesson. The parks don't really owe anything to anyone for being unable to operate - force majeure rules would come into it. I think we saw it with Disney when they first closed the US parks they made no mention of extending APs, and then after being flooded with questions by passholes, they announced they would extend... and it seems to be the status quo. At least Dreamworld were up front about what they would do. I still haven't gotten any info from Village through any medium, without seeking it myself. I think its at least arguable that the parks aren't obligated, but its certainly a goodwill gesture that should help them avoid any ACCC related claims - whether or not they would have merit, or whether or not they'd be successful. An extra month on an expiry date, for example - is minimal cost on the balance sheet if you get the money a month later, but is great goodwill.

Oh Mama Mia, Mama Mia.... Uhh.. The second one. Definitely the second one. When they were more prolific, we heard nothing but problems with the direct debit provider - people being turned away at the gate and having to call the company to have something sorted out delaying their entry into the park. Debit Success i think? As someone who has just dealt with a direct debit stuff up (with a different provider for a different reason) that first started at more than $1000 overdue payable immediately, and after I paid in full, then realising it shouldn't have been $1000, so they agreed to refund $200 and stop the next month's payment, but instead of stopping the next month's payment, they took it twice, so then they ended up owing me close to $500, and after chasing them for a week to get it refunded, the refund amount was wrong. So no, direct debit set ups are best left alone - especially with a provider that has shown an inability to prevent frequent issues. I hadn't seen the e-gift card news @Brad2912 so thanks for letting us know.

Not quite. Qantas executives are taking NO pay, not REDUCED pay. given the remuneration in the VRTP annual report I’m sure all the executives can afford to forgo their salary for the rest of the financial year. If you’re not retiring anytime soon, seek some advice before acting. If you ditch the stock strategy, the fund will ditch the stock, making a permanent loss. when stock prices go up, you won’t be holding them. If you retain the shares in the fund (by staying in a stock strategy), when they go up (and most of them will) your losses will reduce. best advice: before changing super strategies, seek financial advice from a professional advisor.

thanks for supplying the info Jordan - can you include the source when you post these (ie: i assume GCB in this case), just so we know if a different source pops up with other info we know it isn't duplicated?

So a limit of 80, accounting for staff, and climbers - who may not all be in the same space at one time, but this doesn't count for the parks.

Oof. I would have said for at least 3 years now. Yep. About as much as a new toilet block.

Well of course! Unknown wooden coaster at Sunac Jinan isn't slated to open until 2021! Maybe by the time it opens, Dreamworld will have a name for it.

No I believe it - they won't have a single case of covid... Because: Anyone who appears sick will be shot without diagnosis Can't report a case if you never diagnosed it! ...all jokes aside.

COVID-19: Why are the Gold Coast theme parks still operating?
In Australia? None that I can disclose. There are few examples of large scale employers shutting down in Australia, However I do know a few employers who, while still operating (because they're an office environment, not a tourist attraction) have told their workers that they were creating special leave provisions just for their casual workforce in case of a covid related shutdown. If we're talking tourist attractions - like overseas theme parks for example - Disney has continued to pay their park based cast members that cannot work from home. Many third party contractors and college program participants were termed, but the direct engagement workforce continues to be paid. But Disney is Disney! They're so rich, and they aren't even in Australia! Yes. However Dreamworld was able to pay all their staff for an extended period after TRRR. It can be done. Not being cynical at all. As Skeet mentioned, there were numerous reports they didn't have sanitiser. I had seen their social channel pointing to the dispensers mounted around the park, and had made the assumption (clearly wrongly) that they might have installed the dispensers to appear proactive without being able to source the product to fill them. Now I see that the reports of no sanitiser available were made before they installed the new dispensers, and judging by Brendo's confirmation, they're operating. I have misunderstood the reports, and I do stand corrected. I asked Brendo a clarifying question to check whether his report differed from what i've heard. I agree - It's great they have been proactive, after claiming they had sanitiser stations throughout the park, but didn't, and then they installed dispensers after people complained none could be found. Oh shit wait - that's not proactive - thats REactive. How dare I be cynical. THanks for clarifying that for me Brendo - its great to have the correct info! As a side note - what did you think of some of the placement locations? I thought the ones on village bean for example were really jarring to the theme, and disappointing that they couldn't have placed them in a spot that impacted on the environment a bit less than they do. Proof! Despite being sandwiched between China's 82007 cases and South Korea's 8320 cases (the first and fifth most cases of any country in the world) as you can see here, North Korea has not reported a single case! It is a triumph of the supreme leader's might and power that and a testament to his leadership that the blessed people have been protected by his grace and wisdom! They were indeed Comrade.

COVID-19: Why are the Gold Coast theme parks still operating?
Yes, Singapore does have a lot going for it (although I wouldn't say 'best' - North Korea so far has gone without a single infection, so i'd suggest they're probably the 'best'.) The fact is that Singapore's social responsibility is deeply ingrained in their culture as a small island nation. They're a global travel hub, and so they've been exposed to the worst of the pandemics of the past. Like SARS. And they learned from that. Their citizens self-sacrifice more for the social good. Possibly infected? They stay home. When an Australian is possibly infected? they go out partying at Friday's night club while awaiting test results. We've also seen today a case of a Sydney couple being denied a corona test because they weren't in the 'risk categories', only to be found later to be positive. This 'social separation' concept that we've all heard this week? Singapore has been doing that for over a month. Actually, discussion of the workforce welfare has been brought up a few times already. Here's a few truths: Many businesses that have closed, either voluntarily or mandatorily, have continued to pay their staff. Some businesses have even offered to pay casuals, even though they aren't obligated to do so. Casuals are paid a 'casual loading' that is intended to compensate them for not having all the leave and benefits of a full time worker. This is the trade off and is why Casuals get the short end of the shut-down. I know many are typically low-income, and live paycheck to paycheck, but that is the unfortunate life of the casual worker. This, however, while very unfortunate for the large casual workforce should not be a reason to remain open and compromise the health of the community. Given the large casual nature of the park workforce, perhaps they should consider paying their casuals at least base rate for a period while they are closed. Hand Sanitiser stations have been shown mounted to several locations around the park on their social channels. I think the question is more whether those dispensers were actually filled? Did you test each station? If so, and they had sanitiser in them, maybe the reports of no sanitiser are a case of people using them more frequently than anticipated on day one, and they've needed to up their game on having them refilled throughout the day. Maybe that's the new cap to stay under the 500 outdoor gathering rules? 🤣

COVID-19: Why are the Gold Coast theme parks still operating?
No doubt that'll be the spin. The PM also announced that in addition to the 100 person ban, all state governments were working on legislation to cover these bans, as well as legislation covering smaller gatherings. I think though, if they specify that an airport is exempt, then they are considering that such a large place would be otherwise subject to the ban, even though it isn't a sit-down two hour affair - so the previous VRTP excuse doesn't wash this time.
