  1. egads... i completely glossed over the '2 hour booking and minimum F&B spend part of the above post. Holy shit. so that just brings us back to dealing with what i mentioned earlier...
  2. well, that actually ties in well with the story - considering the next scene is what you get in the ride. its still horribly executed, but at least someone was thinking of cohesion somewhere along the lines...
  3. Of course its a limited time. Cubs get bigger. That doesn't rule out the first step in a 'test the waters' plan to expand the park's horizons. I'm sure many regarded the Sky Flyer similarly - as a test prior to pushing ahead with the grand atlantis plan. Is it that big a stretch to think they might be trialling this in a similar way? History says i'm probably wrong, and you're quite likely right. I'm just saying don't rule it out - Atlantis was certainly unexpected for Sea World after years of neglect. They could surprise us. That's all i'm saying.
  4. I know the walk-in model worked for them overseas, but it was always ridiculous in terms of trying to plan an event without going through their extortionate event hosts. You wanna take the team out for a cheeky lunch and golf in a long lunch? be prepared to spend half of that time waiting for a bay. Bookings put them in line with most other "group" entertainment options - like bowling, or - you know - actual golf. I applaud them on this long overdue move. Now if they could just hire some wait staff...
  5. so, TOT needs more maintenance, but we'll open it up before its finished so the park doesn't look dead. Sounds like safety taking a back seat. I guess it can't really hurt anyone... #wait
  6. It's already been discussed here that Dreamworld's two 'offerings' that would drive visitation were the tiger cubs, and the winter skate thing. We've often criticised one park or the other for not offering \ responding to something the other park has offered. I agree there's definitely a risk associated with bringing the cubs in, but I don't think we can write-off the conservation message from an organisation that does such great conservation work through the Sea World R&RFI without first seeing what they actually build. Tiger Island may be world class, but the cub kindy elements cannot be regarded at the same level (for the simple fact that nobody will invest in such an elaborate habitat for animals that will only use it for a few short months). i'll reserve my final judgment for when I see it, but i'm happy to give the benefit of the doubt, whilst acknowledging it is clearly in response to Dreamworld's current attractions. Since Alma Park zoo closed, there aren't many 'typical' zoos nearby. The thought of rotating some different animals from Bullen's through PC will give the park (and the GC) something new for repeat visitors too.
  7. Sorry... let me rephrase that for you Both Sky Voyager and SX360 were under construction at similar times, so it seems a fairly logical conclusion that similar things might be impacting them.
  8. Game, Set & Match. Ok, so PC won't have them every day, but it is a boon for VRTP that they can include PC in their annual passes - meaning there is now one less reason to buy a pass to Dreamworld. The Bullen family have worked with Village for many years. Craig and Zelie do stunts, animal training, and the occasional acting role in movies and TV, as well as supplying animals to the productions. Their credits include stunts in local productions like Ocean Girl, and Hollywood features such as Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course. In addition, they've served many films as animal trainers, including Red Dog:True Blue, War Horse, Charlotte's Web and Crocodile Dundee 3. They market their animal training services as Animals All Around The release suggests that animals will rotate through PC, and i'd suggest that the Bullen's are likely going to be supplying many of them. Dreamworld houses tiger cubs in a demountable building, and later in a glass-pool-fence styled exhibit with astroturf. How hard do you think either of those things would be to build for an animal exhibit on a farm. If the plan is to continue rotating animals through the 'global conservation centre' then they can invest in a certain level of quality, reusable exhibit suited to anything. I'm not sure what you mean by 'not sufficient', and while PC has always been a 'farm', you can't label it a 'farm' when it also has wild animals like Kangaroos, Emus, Koalas etc... so this could just be the start of a PC transformation that sees them tackle the 'wildlife' monopoly that Dreamworld has held for some time.
  9. Agree with themagician. I think it's safe to assume that DW got caught with their pants down with SkyVoyager, and weren't prepared for the requirements imposed. On the other hand, VRTP have the benefit of having seen these requirements come into force, as well as learning potentially what went wrong with SkyVoyager before they broke ground.
  10. Precisely. The simple fact is that if you close down what is effectively an entire land worth of staff, including front gate, attraction operation, food and bev, and custodial, you've gotta take a hit - either a financial one by redeploying them elsewhere, or a recruitment one by letting them go and hoping they come back next season. Let's be real - The April holiday period is still warm enough to swim, as is the september period. If you're going to close down, you're only shut from May to August - just 4 months. It's too long for your staff to survive, and they'll 'find work elsewhere', and then if they do - would they come back, knowing they'll have to do it all again next year? I know WnWS had return staff - @StingRay is a testament to that - but its a job, not something that you'd sustain long term. This means that for the next season, you have to recruit. And four months to recruit staff for an entire park is about what is needed for application periods, group interviews, training etc... and there's a lot of lost knowledge as your new staff are going to be relearning the lessons last season's staff already knew... so basically you're advertising for next season the day your staff finish up for last. Most staff are casual, so simply cutting back shifts in the winter time (when it's to be expected anyway) is a far better way to keep most of your workforce on board for the following season - instead of 6 shifts per week, they get 3. They might supplement another job in the winter to boost their income, but they're still 'connected' to the park for the next year.
  11. Hopefully once they close Trolls, they'll be able to provide some much needed shade and seating. That area is really lacking in shade and seats.
  12. Capacity of $1800 an hour. Even if they ran 11-4, thats potential for $9000 a day. I'm not sure they will fill those sessions, except maybe on big weekends - unless of course they hang Cosentino up in the middle of the rink. I'm glad they're trying to fill the gap - $15 just seems too much IMO.
  13. they've removed the easy parts. the tower is much harder to deal with. Honestly - there's no reason to pull it down (except aesthetics) until they have something else to go into the same space.
  14. I'm sure they would be, and I don't have a problem with it either, but according to their website, nothing says you "can't" - so it'd be interesting to see how they'd respond to someone who argued the point.
  15. The American parks did it as of May 1st - smokers need to go outside the bag-check fences to smoke - so the entire precincts are smoke free. They also banned oversized strollers, and loose or dry ice (although they will supply ice from their outlets to people who ask) too - there are now painted boxes on the ground for people to size up their stroller to ensure it fits their new requirements
  16. It might have been useful to present that opinion when you stated it in your previous post - that could have avoided the confusion.
  17. transforming the house? shocking! Hopefully it will re-energise the site!
  18. I was going to come on and make a joke about needing it to move to the designated smoking area, but the park's FAQ seems a little more lenient: My read - you can smoke 'anywhere' within the park, but you need to be the minimum distances from the places excluded by law. Wow, that's an eye opener!
  19. Kraken is listed on the park wiki as costing $7million. The Abyss figure you're quoting is likely also the 'ride purchase' cost - so comparing apples with apples, its $7m vs $12m. The $17m figure quoted above is likely total construction and all associated costs right down to path upgrades, fencing, civils and earthworks, pilings and footings etc... The total construction cost of each is likely a bit higher for Abyss. I can't remember the figure now, but @Mark Shaw has previously suggested as a rule of thumb that a ratio (30%? 50%?) of the total cost is the ride purchase price? I can't remember but i'm sure @Tim Dasco does...
