Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster Overhaul
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Spotty's topic in Theme Park Discussion
It is. Surely. But the cloak and dagger website updates in the middle of the night without a peep from the park drives speculation. The whole direction of this discussion is just "be transparent". I doubt a pump is gonna take two years to arrive. If it wasn't safety related, then i'm wondering why it had such a sudden closure with almost no forewarning. And i'm left wondering because... you know.... vacuum. Yes, it's a real thing every day. for the past 3 years. We all know it, but this is why it should not be an excuse any longer. Because this thing is 'new normal' it should have been factored in. It is no longer unexpected. (And certainly shouldn't contribute to an additional YEAR delay not even two weeks after the initial announcement.)- 259 replies

That's just it though. The media slaughtered MW with headlines of "Major Movie World Ride closes after almost 20 years of operation" instead of "it's getting refurbished". If the park had been fully transparent, anyone that saw the headline would know it was bullshit - but the park leaves a vacuum, of course the media will fill it with drivel.- 259 replies

Dreamworld’s Ocean Parade Expansion 2023

Riding bananas is probably entering dangerous meme territory, but certainly they could have had B1 and B2 at the back of the car waving with the seats in front. How can it be BiP carousel without bananas? (I am however conscious that the park has been putting things in place as they go, and they've clearly prioritised getting the rides back up after the dreamworks stuff is removed, to keep rides running. So, this may not be the final product, and they're just adding things as they become available. I'm keen to be surprised. -

The problem with that is they originally said 2024, so now saying 2025 means people don't like it because they're going to get something slower than they were originally told/thought. They can deliver it in 2024 now, but the reaction will be "should've said that from the beginning" Correct, they are still being felt. My dealer has just advised i'm going to be waiting at least another 12 months on a vehicle I ordered in April last year. it happens. But they aren't blaming covid shipping delays, and they said i'd be facing more than a 12 month wait to start with because they had a backlog. I'm not saying covid isn't affecting things, i'm saying that we all know covid is affecting things, so you should be factoring those effects into your timeline from the get-go, and not blame covid when your timeline blows out by a year less than two weeks after you announced your original planned opening date. exactly. (Also, for anyone skimming, let's be clear that the park hasn't blamed covid for this year's blowout. the point is they haven't said anything, and the covid angle is just a hypothetical being speculated on....)- 259 replies

There isn't much to Rivals backwards that I know of. Obviously they can only accommodate one row because of the reduced clearances to the row in front, so it sounds like a single backwards row on a train would be cheaper than two forwards rows. (Although then you need two sets of ride cameras to capture the backwards row so it probably comes out in the wash overall. The tech on the spinning seat obviously costs more, and requires more maintenance, so the costs for spinning seat are more or less justified. I'm sure i've said before that Leviathan's backwards seat is a waste. The true woodie experience is rushing through headchoppers and the like and facing backwards is not a fun ride, whereas on rivals it's insanely fun. -

Wait, you mean Disney rides never travelled over guests before, and thats why loose items weren't an issue, but now we're travelling closely to non-riding guests, they've changed the rules? 😮 it's almost like they've come to the same conclusion that our parks have! Here's your happy medium - our safety culture still allows rollercoasters to be built and ridden by humans, with the proviso that no loose items are allowed, and additional seatbelts and RFIDs are used to eliminate risks. Seriously, if it's that big of a deal to you - move overseas. I hear some regions in South America and their efficiency on their coasters is awesome with no bothersome seatbelts and they've only killed a handful of people this year. Maybe we'll get lucky.- 329 replies

I think given the IP present in park, the appearance of a photo opportunity during the MW30th celebrations, and the fact that the only other film production that comes to mind is the 1989 Fred Savage film called 'The Wizard' about a video game playing kid, which was published under the Universal banner, I can't imagine what other plausible conclusions we'd have come up with. Honestly there'd have just been 17 pages of arguments with people who can't make up their mind whether to make our parks more efficient through the use of turnstiles, or have our ride operators manning the front gates, popcorn stands and bathrooms is simples.

I never said it was the 'only way' - i acknowledged alternative methods. I simply discussed why an app was preferred as being user friendly, and fairly difficult to break. As for getting it installed, a QR code is generally all you need. Most people these days don't need their app store password as their finger or face ID works just fine. What if they overcharge? What if the connection is down? Theres a whole bunch of shit operators have to worry about without being trained in retail operations as well. Thats WHY you have to go to a store (or retail cart, etc) to purchase these additional experiences outside of the app environment. And so help me if you point out some random park in Flugerstrom gives eftpos terminals to their ride operators as justification i'm really going to lose my shit. When they get to the front page, do they not then have to insert their username and password and login to access their ticketing and other information? Does that not also give the merchant certain access to information you're concerned about? These days you can prevent apps from tracking other activity outside of the app, but regardless, those who prefer paranoia have alternatives, so what's so wrong with having an app for those who don't care? -

Purely having an address bar they can accidentally type over, or click back and break the authentication, or pressing stop accidentally, or any number of other things makes it not-idiot-proof. And there are still to this day a lot of idiots that insisted on writing their name and address on a bit of paper instead of QR checkins. And their personal details are probably still gathering dust on a shelf in restaurants, clubs, and entertainment venues to this day because the data guys can't just 'wipe' the databases when its on paper. I'm quite ok to keep using the app, and i'm quite ok for you to keep not using it. It'd be preferable though, they offer a non-app purchase option for upcharges in park in a way that doesn't require operators to carry eftpos terminals. -

Absolutely acknowledge this, but the app generally delivers something to the buyer in return. Still heavily slanted to the merchant, but for example - the wait times, the virtual queue, online ordering for food, Sure, you could web base this but there's a lot of people out there that struggle to use web-based interfaces that find apps really simple and intuitive (not to mention idiot proof). Nice hat by the way. -

They're still contemptuous. They're still dancing around the fact that they closed it with not even a week's notice. They've got *checks* ride maintenance plans published until September - so don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining because "planned maintenance". It's clear something unexpected happened, and you can't blame that on "pandemic supply chain", so just be bloody transparent about it. This doesn't pass the sniff test, and the additional extension makes it smell even worse. How about they start with: "During routine maintenance we check all aspects of our ride and with Scooby Doo being nearly 20 years old, our most recent routine checks identified *widgets out of tolerance*. While we had planned to announce our exciting upgrades later this year, these widgets mean we will need more time to do so and we unfortunately need to close scooby sooner than planned to ensure the best experience for all our guests". Granted, this doesn't acknowledge the overnight extension to 2025, but with the above posted 2 weeks ago, they're on the front foot about transparency right from the get go, so when the date blows out overnight, we're already on board with "she's getting older, and needs more work than originally thought". Also - while i realise supply chain issues are still a thing - COVID was a 2022 problem and most people are getting on with the job. There is going to come a time (and I feel its very soon if not already) where any organisation should be factoring any lags or delays into their initial plans (they've had 3 years notice so far) and so when your ride upgrades are announced a week ago, you don't go blaming a 3 year old pandemic for extending the opening date an entire year.- 259 replies

I mean, App usage is pretty much the default these days. Both Village and Disney have app-based tickets (Although I do love Dreamworld's option to have it in your Apple Wallet so you can show your barcode on phone or watch to enter (never lose the damn thing again!) and while i'm sure parks will definitely have an alternative if you prefer to wear your hats covered in tinfoil, it's definitely the simpler way of entering the park. Purchasing backwards uses the same app as the entry ticket so if you already have it, you're not giving anything else away. Everything is "Simples" for you, but I don't see you running a theme park company, so maybe it isn't "Simples". -

I had my Son height checked at a park recently. In addition to putting a wristband on him with his height, they wrote down his name and DOB as well as the height measured and the date. I asked why so much detail, and apparently it is because they've had situations of parents getting wristbands off one kid, and putting it on another, smaller kid. Ride ops can still send height-checked kids back to GS if they think the kid is too short. How easy would it be to have a camera mount checked, and then swap it for another one. Or maybe they take it off for lunch and then don't put it on in the same secure fashion that it was when it was checked? No. No fucking wristbands. No fucking turnstiles. No removing the RFID scanning system on Steel Taipan. This is Australia. Not the USA, not Europe. Or anywhere else in the world. NOBODY CARES what they do overseas because overseas might tolerate 1 injury a year, we have ZERO TOLERANCE on ANYONE getting hurt. Because what happens when someone DOES get hurt is the entire fucking industry gets the screws tightened, forcing people to do things like "no tissues allowed" and "RFIDs on rollercoasters". Any level of risk is unacceptable, and no amount of "some parks do this" from you is going to change anything.- 329 replies

Without knowing what was in his mind, for my own, I immediately think of: the loss of Scooby The reduction in capacity at Wild West I had thought about this when Dreamworld put out so much info about their current projects - right down to each ride's planned timeframes and scope of works. It isn't something we're used to, but the transparency at Dreamworld has been met with enthusiasm from folks who heard the news, while the closure of scooby has been met with much derision within the general public. A more fully fleshed out park that doesn't have a gaping vacant hole in the middle... plus what slick said.- 259 replies

I heard someone say the other day that they don't sell wristbands in the park anymore and it's all app-based, and for me, thats a big missed opportunity for lost revenue anytime you're having app issues (or for internationals that don't have mobile data, for example). Like - how hard is it for the photo centre to have a book of wristbands to sell when needed? If its a case of having it in the app so that you don't oversell the wristbands and can control how many are available, just have the photo staff process it on an ipad after taking payment? -

Given how strict superman is, I see no reason to worry. We've heard from @Noxegon that not even tissues are permitted. I think we should see netting installed under the track that guests walk underneath which is a sensible precaution, but you can get closer to Jet Rescue, Road Runner and Superman Track (near the show building) much closer than you'll be close to the track in the helix. If you look at the fencing, there is currently a double fence so even if you get in those first gates, theres another fence before the helix. The overhead track right at the front of the helix is the only issue, and a net is a sensible addition. no other changes will be needed.- 406 replies

You'd think so, but it actually causes more issues. (Full disclosure - I am an ex-smoker, and the smell of it triggers me and makes me feel sick). If you remove areas that are at least reasonably close walking distance, most smokers will do it anywhere. Disney banned it in all their parks, but they have great cast that are very observant and will spot wayward smokers in a second. Our parks don't have that many staff walking the streets - and if you don't give smokers an area to go to that is reasonably close, they'll light up anywhere and walk amongst the crowds smoking away. (And vapers don't consider themselves as "smoking" so alot of them already do walk around vaping away) The superman area is in a corner, near the action, but not in anyone's path - you don't have to walk through that area to get anywhere. It is a pretty well placed spot and not too far from most things at the front.- 406 replies
