  1. Disney used to have arcades in their parks... and they had arcades in their resorts. they actually rotated arcade machines in between the parks and resorts to 'change it up' regularly... so I doubt they'd remove intencity in park just because they had a new intencity outside the park. On that note - if they're including the intencity brand, i'd like to see them go back to the intencity of old - like the former one at Parramatta Westfield. One that wasn't just a glamorous Timezone, but was in fact a VR centre with all sorts of sims - Parramatta had a full motion flight sim, mecha sims, centrifuge (similar to mission space) and quite a few other experiences in addition to the standard arcade... I once spent many hours (and dollars) there during school holidays back in my time - but i am getting on in years. i'd love to see something like that again in the future.
  2. FN has plenty of space - between the sound stages, intencity, scooby queue, chinatown alley if they really wanted to, they could use stars cafe, arkham courtyard... i'm not happy to see Showstage go, as I feel that the showstage is the one thing the park could really use to absorb crowds - putting in a stage show there would really help MW solve its current strain issues - so losing such a multipurpose, well fitted performance venue will be yet another loss to the park. I know they haven't used it for much besides FN for a while, but that isn't the point - they should be using it, not demolishing it.
  3. I know what you're saying Joz but the first two steps to fix that park is to improve operations \ staffing, and to build higher capacity attractions to take the load. the park has less capacity today than when it opened. Once they get themselves 'back to par' then they can look at how they can handle more people with other ideas, methods and techniques.
  4. No issues - you've got your opinion and i've got mine (I'd probably pay to ride it too). When the choices are SBNO vs Upcharge, sure - we'd love the park to install something in a site rather than leave the old ride there to rot.. but would that be your decision every time? What if every time the park retired an old attraction, they proposed the option of either leaving it there, or installing a new upcharge with dreadful capacity - the park would become another Adrenaline Park. A zipline is awesome in the right setting, and standing on it's own it'd probably generate some good revenue. I enjoy them and have ridden several around the world in unique and interesting settings... However looking at the failed attempt at WnW, I don't want any of the parks to go down the same road and make the same mistakes. There are too many attractions in Dreamworld (that don't cost extra) competing with an expensive upcharge. The ones i've ridden have been in tourist trap areas with unique settings where everything else was just as expensive and it was choose your experience, not choose whether you play for free or pay for play. Especially since - as you say - the platform would need to be elevated to accommodate the gravity needed to make it the whole way (and compensate for the rope sag) - Dreamworld would need to drop some cash to retrofit the platforms to suit. To be honest, I did give it serious thought. I even thought about raising the platforms at BOTH ends, so you could buy a one-way, or a return journey and go both ways. THAT would be cool. But let's be realistic (and i'm not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but laying it out so others will understand too): With safety briefing, fitting and loading, you're dealing with at least a 2:1 staff ratio (one at each end) so its labour intensive Per rope, you're getting one person about every 5 minutes, so 12PPH is your theoretical maximum You'll never hit your theoretical maximum because only a small percentage of people will pay the exhorbitant cost to ride that you have to charge just to justify the number of staff working on it and the cost to build it in the first place you therefore won't cover your costs, and close the attraction in all but peak holiday periods where you're more likely to be busy The attraction will then operate only seasonally (surfrider? vintage cars?) when it's busy enough to justify the staff - perhaps 12 weeks of the year? You're then left with an effectively SBNO attraction for 40 weeks of the year. Not much better than the 52 weeks the Skylink was sitting for, plus its taking up real estate that a fully fledged attraction could use all year round.
  5. but why? although we have been without Skylink for some time, you'd once again be replacing a nice, family friendly, rock solid attraction with high capacity with something you'd have to upcharge for, with terrible capacity, that would appeal to only a few percent of your overall demographic. most people who would want to ride it wouldn't want to pay for it, and most people who could pay for it, wouldn't want to ride it. You'd be left with a white elephant - just as bad as the one installed at WNW GC - that despite the considerable expense they went to to install it, i've not once ever seen it actually operate. Please no more dumb ideas for 2016?
  6. it's been mentioned already. I don't really see how SE could be impacted by construction, unless the construction was to take place within the SE envelope. WWF doesn't close for winter, but it does need annual maintenance and as it gets on in years it's maintenance is going to be more and more involved. just have to wait and see.
  7. You do realise what happens to that swamp when it rains right?
  8. that isn't justification for the staff to remain slow though - if they were to speed up, queues WOULD be shorter. The fact that the park IS small, and there IS a lot less to go on means they should be bending backwards to get as many people through as quickly as they can.
  9. Comment on that article says it all really: Just because something is a first - doesn't mean it's a best. MDMC was a first. Enough said. Besides - we already know that what is coming is a coaster - we have the applications on the council website, in conjunction with the park's own announcement. It'd be really good if you could get with that program and stop trying to suggest other rides are coming, or should be coming, based on your own personal preferences. Disappointed that Derren continues to wave the 'psychology' banner. Simon Singh called him out on his use of the word, to the point where he had to concede that he used tricks which did not rely on psychology to achieve their outcome. How will the ride be 'psychological' except in the way that other rides are psychological? I look forward to representations of the biological, cognitive, social, and neuro perspectives and a whole lot of peer-reviewed papers then.Disappointed that Derren continues to wave the 'psychology' banner. 10. ^ Wrong Alex @skeetafly - I'm not interested in calculating their theoretical capacity as such - just to see how long it takes for one ride vehicle to make a complete circuit. I'm not interested in calculating down to the PPH, but if random samples show SE cycling once every 5 minutes, or GL cycling once every 7-8, clearly it would show a problem.Right now all we have is queue times and waiting - but no hard data on exactly how often a single ride vehicle goes around the track. I think though this isn't a 'speculation and dreaming' thread, this is a realistic discussion on what the park should, can, and needs to do to fix their atrocious operations at present.
  11. ^Perhaps that's something movie world needs during peak - temporary attractions during summer to ease the demand - just as LPS has. Sure - it's more carnival than theme park, but right now the park should take whatever it can get!!! Actually, yes - I wonder if you might time a full cycle on each ride... pick one car \ train, and time it from the time it dispatches, to the time it dispatches next - so include load time, unload time, and idle time. If you do the ones you can, and perhaps the ones you don't someone else will do at some point: GL from dispatch to dispatch AA from dispatch to dispatch SE from launch to launch (make sure it's the same train) Batwing from launch to launch WWF from splashdown to splashdown (make sure its the right boat number!) Scooby isn't ever really going to be much different because of continuous load, but JL can be sometimes. perhaps if you time JL from the time it reaches unload, until the time you unload? it'd be great to get some 'random samples' of ride cycle times over the break. We know how fast these things can cycle when they're running at peak staffing levels - on events etc - how well do they do over their busiest time of the year?
  12. For those who don't want to follow dubious links, it's the Zip line that runs through Fremont St in Las Vegas. You gotta have a lot of length for these to be good. They're shit capacity, so it'd be an upcharge too. Yay for 12PPH! I don't remember what Eureka's capacity was, but it was a damn sight better than this... You should work for VRTP - you'd be the perfect person to replace high capacity classic attractions with low capacity attractions!
  13. With JL - From memory - they will send cars through empty when the ride is stacking - if it takes too long for a car to load and launch, cars start backing up in the final scenes. Eventually, cars stop mid-ride, and it ruins the experience for everyone. Sending a car through empty helps them catch up (so sending several through catches up a lot) and it also saves time when they come back around and unload too. It might seem like a waste to do that but in reality it makes everyone's experience on the ride better. Pretty sure Scooby is run the same way too. It's funny you know - I was searching through old threads... REALLY old threads (2004) and I found a TR that I wrote when I came up to the GC on holiday during the September school holidays. I complained about capacity at Dreamworld (among other things) and had nothing but praise for the VRTP parks. Back in those days, MW still had the studio tour, PASS, Matrix walk through and blazing saddles. No Green Lantern, no Batwing, No Justice League (we still had Batman Adventure), no Intencity, no HWSD, and we still had River Ride. All of the things the park has since lost are all of their sponges, and the new additions have been spectacular, but poor capacity. Batman Adventure would effectively clear the queue when they took guests into pre-show in the library. Although it was PRE-preshow, you didn't feel like you were waiting - you felt like the adventure had already begun. They could do this in roughly the simulator time (which I think was about 4 minutes) so you could almost guarantee you were on that ride in about 12-16 minutes. LTRR is pretty much the same story - the pre-show could run on an endless loop taking almost the entire queueline in one hit, with a similar load-cycle-exit time. These rides really couldn't be fucked up operations wise - they were constantly cycling. Rides with a load-start-stop-unload-wait cycle (like most of the new ones we have today) are the problem. (Yes operations is poor too - but they both contribute) It is rides like these that the park is missing. Not dark rides, or kids rides, or simulator rides - just sponges. any ride that is capable of admitting a large group at once, and getting through those people quickly, but still keeping them occupied the entire time. FInally - and this is especially important in summer - they need rides that are air-conditioned. In peak summertime periods, the best thing in the world was riding LTRR, as it was dark, cool, and you would get wet. WWF was not the same - as to get wet, you had to endure several outdoor flume sections in the sun. Not a bad idea Skeet - but even indoors, or in air conditioning, non-face (costumed) characters don't last long. I've worn several incarnations of the Shrek suit, and worked as a photographer with the original Shrek costumes. Those costumes are odd - the keep the heat in, the cold doesn't get in - but the outside heat does. You'd have to have meet and greets in a cold room for it to make any difference to the costumed character. When we used to do Shrek shoots at Wonderland - Farquaard and Shrek did 20 minute stints every hour. Donkey would come out last, and donkey had no minimum limit - as soon as the performer had had enough, they would get up and leave, even if it was in the middle of a photo. WH&S is very important for characters in costume. Face characters on the other hand - Marilyn, Austin, Shaggy etc - they should be able to do longer stints... I would suggest somewhere along the way some braniac decided that all characters should have the same time limit. If an appearance room is necessary - they have plenty of shopfronts they could use. Actors could cycle in and out, and be replaced by someone in the same costume every 20 minutes - just as they do in WDW... or - use showstage. Its wasted as it is at the moment - has dressing rooms backstage, plenty of queue area and seating... perfect!
  14. #ShameVRTP DnM at WNWGC was an institution, and they took it away - god knows why as I always found it to be great... ...and then they bring it into WNWS? Shows how much they care about the locals who made their theme park stable what it is today... (but then again, they don't really show much care for the Sydney folk either...)
  15. Don't knock the 64k RAM...
  16. I must admit it's not an original idea - and it has been done before... Gooooooooooooooooogle
  17. Universal Singapore also offers advance purchase of fast pass. not sure what the T&Cs are - I imagine they're non-refundable. If you pay for a friend on the understanding they'll pay you back, and then they don't show, i'd suggest your friend should still pay you back...
  18. Interesting name choice. Gold Coast Bulletin would have a field day with that.
  19. As someone already mentioned, this might just be a test to see whether people would be willing to pay additional admission for a separate ticketed event - like FN or WC - with the view to reinstating them as a separate event on a regular basis. Its a kids movie, so clearly its targeting the families who live or are staying on the GC as a different form of nighttime entertainment. I'd have liked to have seen them trial this in november or december pre-christmas, with a view to running all summer if it proved popular... Personally i'd jump at the chance for some more classic adult films (get your minds out of the gutter) as well - like Jaws... but the rest of the park should operate slides - or at least the parts of the park it is safe to open (I know some slides didn't run at night when they previously had movies...)
  20. for a fraction of a second? that isn't 'catching fire' thats being scorched by the source of the flame. thats head damage. the fire never caught... but now we're onto semantics. I don't agree a light fixture 'caught fire'. I accept it is plausible a flame was in too close a proximity to a component and caused it to melt \ deform. I don't see a fixture catching fire.
  21. ^Was that PC on PC or PC on PS4 or PS4 on Xbox 3PC or Lynx on Game Gear?
  22. There's merit in the idea - but as to why else would they move it? if they're run off gas canister as most are (as opposed to gas lines to a central feed) - perhaps some safety officer had an issue with crew replacing canisters that had to be loaded from the front, and rather than get heights \ harness qualified techs to do that every day, they decided to move it backwards so it could be loaded without it? Plausible? Yes. Plausible a pyro effect mis-fired causing heat damage to part of a fixture? Yes. Plausible a light "caught fire" for "a fraction of a second and self extinguished" ? No.
  23. i have a good reply to that, but first i'm going to watch the video.
  24. Actually, it's a green dye, to make it look green, not brown. I'm nowhere near 100% on this, but isn't the Murrisippi connected to Oakey Ck? And if so - then it probably can't be a bit less brown than that as it is the natural water colour.
