It's a cable holder. As the cable car moves up and down the tower, a bunch of these fold out to prevent the winch cables from flying about. This design is pretty old school - Intamin now use a passive holder that the cable car collects on its journey.

I've never noticed these before!

Looking back it looks like they were always painted black and I can't believe I've never seen them!

When the Drop first opened there was at least one instance (but rumoured many more) one of the cable guides didn't lock up correctly and the gondola took it out on the way down.  They were modified to fix the issue.

I wonder if the Lights are solar powered as I don't think they could do it any other way.

You don't think they could run a conduit down either the outside, or the inside of the tower???

I mean technically they probably could however it would require more work I'm pretty sure if they did run a conduit down the tower, it would be inside it. 

I think you can safely assume they're not solar-powered. If they can run power to an entire plant room 115m+ into the air, they can get power to the letters on the way up.

It's already been confirmed, the lights are to be powered by the new wind farm and Space X rockets will be launched from the side of it.  (do I need to put a /s)

As you can all see from this photo, taken 5 years in the future after the advent of time travel, Dreamworld has removed Steel Taipan for the terrible ride that it is and rebuilt thunder river rapids. Hydroelectric electricity will be generated from the flowing waters to power the letters.

/god this joke is already getting on in years.

So at "night time" when DW closes and the Rapids are turned off, the lights go out?

No 

The final letter was installed overnight 

Apparently the reason for nearly 12 month referb time was a mix up where the received a m instead of a w

Image (thanks to Jaggs Journeys). You can see that the W is an upside-down M (most likely an M was accidentally ordered instead of a W)

This is the W in the ground yesterday before it was lifted into place. It does indeed look like an upside M, but I don’t think I’d a mistake, I think it’s just the style of font they went with

Not to nitpick here, but it looks like a W in the proposal image, not an upside down M.

Maybe an actual W as per the render was too wide? Or indeed it's also just a different font (render was a mock up only).
