  1. That should have been your first clue. The gap that the gondola swings through will always be narrower than the side it doesn't. Wider spacing is in the direction of travel, to better brace against the forces of the ride - kind of how if I hit you with an exercise ball whilst your feet are planted side by side, you're more likely to fall over, whereas if you're standing with your legs widely splayed to the side, a hit from the side would see you remain standing. Like this: Notice that the 'wider spacing' is the side not travelled through, to provide better bracing in the direction of travel...
  2. S-O-S - international distress signal in morse code. 'Save Our Souls'.
  3. I wonder if the lighting faces both ways. can you imagine neighbours east and west of the park having this psychotic face glowing at them through the night? hahahah.
  4. Getting a personalised memento that isn't just a dog tag from a vending machine is a nice touch. Hopefully it sticks around.
  5. Loving the new versatile options, and the size charts are a bonus too! As i'm sure you'd have order histories and such - if one were to choose the lucky dip, is it at least likely that you wouldn't supply one that has already been purchased where sizing and stocks permit?
  6. ^And, in general, most of us would agree with that statement, but as COTD, like the Dinosaurs before it, were always only ever planned to be a 'limited run' temporary attraction, this isn't so much a 'substitute' as a 'we've finally worked out what we're going to do with that space, so we can get rid of the temporary stuff now so we can build something permanent'
  7. Yep - did know this - i wasn't saying TDS only had a togo - just that it was the only Disney park that didn't have a Vekoma. I actually loaded every RCDB page for Disney parks and verified each manufacturer - so the stats I posted above are all based off RCDB pages as of yesterday. (And the TDS intamin was included in the Intamin stats)
  8. Perhaps they'd already hired the cannons just for the final night, couldn't cancel the hire, and decided to use them anyway?
  9. I like it personally - and it goes well with the highway-frontage appeal that is already held with Green Lantern. You certainly notice it driving past. As has been said recently on another thread, Dreamworld's frontage to the highway is clear - you can see all the rides, and during the day, see many of them cycling. Movie world on the other hand is set back, with trees blocking a lot of the view. Of course, Superman and Batwing (and a lesser extent, Arkham) are visible from the road, but they don't have that impact that Green Lantern does, especially at night. I look forward to seeing the imagery become a reality as construction tops out.
  10. Although many of the recent big installs have been vekoma, i think part of that reason is because of the benefits of cloning on rides such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - however: Based on RCDB, Disney has 14 Vekoma coasters across Florida, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris and California, and 19 "other" brands (which includes rides on RCDB currently 'under construction'. (Tokyo DisneySea is the only Disney park that doesn't have a Vekoma coaster - instead it has a TOGO ) For simplicity sake, i've attributed the Dynamic Technologies re-tracking of rides like Space and Big Thunder to WED as the original manufacturer - which gives us: Vekoma - 14 WED - 7 Mack - 2 Reverchon - 1 Togo - 1 Intamin - 6 Maurer - 1 Arrow - 1 I'll talk out of my ass for a minute and say I would assume Disney's own in house design teams would work closely and heavily with the vekoma teams on delivering what they do - whereas externals would be heavily reliant on the vekoma team to take care of most. It truly is hard to believe that rides like HKDL's Big Grizzly were put out of the same organisation that created BSG. Certainly Vekoma have built a lot of Disney coasters, but I wouldn't say "nearly every" coaster. You are right, however - in saying that Disney don't appear to have any problems with their Vekoma coasters. I won't begin to try and explain that though.
  11. I think many people have been shied away from Vekoma's offerings given the debacle at USS with BSG. "seats fly off" isn't exactly a strong selling point", and having it shut down for years while they redesigned it to fix the problems it had also doesn't bode well. I know BSG was custom, but it hasn't done them much in the way of favours.
  12. Flights to Canberra come in under $300. Just go there and do the real thing. As for telling you, the argument was - theme park unlikely, more likely to be residential. Whether you see this as them being upfront or not - I disagree - the initial hype was all "we're building a theme park" and we're now left with something akin to resort-style residential estates. Having one or two major entertainment attractions does not make a theme park, which was the argument put forward.
  13. @Noxegon - seems to be pretty common. The PTC coasters built at Wonderland were all made out of Southern Yellow Pine imported from the USA.
  14. In answer to your first question - Still none! To your second paragraph - to me it seems like they've called it a theme park precisely to get their residential through. You're right - it is worlds apart. How quickly will the 'entertainment' aspects of the proposal be canned, delayed, changed, diluted? Whaddya know? I hate to say I told you so.... wait - no i don't.
  15. Thanks for the great update @ThemeTendo. The storage lot in the movie world carpark has been used for both the coaster and TopGolf constructions for a while now. My guess on this is that the scaffolding is likely for vertical construction of the topgolf building (although its always possible it could be for the stationhouse).
  16. Which website? Even Parkz could tell you: https://www.parkz.com.au/parks/US/Vallejo/Six_Flags_Discovery_Kingdom/ride/1616-Boomerang_Coast_to_Coaster/stats
  17. Not until they pour some it isn't.
  18. This was my first thought reading the article. I'm sure they paid him for the work, but surely a flight to Brisbane, a room at Sea World Resort, and front seat on (one of) the first rides would have been a given? His rendition was also "submitted" after the coaster went vertical, so it doesn't count (and his previous rendition wasn't spot on as we've discussed ad nauseum - although it is yet to be seen whether his first creation was the closest, as judged by the Parkz staff - guess we'll just have to wait and see for Richard's announcement?)
  19. Residential development Residential development I appreciate that you don't see the doubt. This is a community that has been actively following theme park proposals and developments across the country for over 13 years (probably 14, but i can't remember the exact date) - the fact is we have seen SO MANY of these proposals come and go, that skepticism is par for the course. If you don't understand the doubt, you need to spend a few days trawling through the back catalogue of announced-and-never-heard-of-again proposals that have been discussed on Parkz and its predecessors. Off the top of my head I can recall a chinese proposal for some sort of park near port macquarie, and another near newcastle. I never heard of either of them again. We've seen stuff all up and down the east coast of Australia that never reached fruition. Sure, they do great with residential developments - however there are also some changes afoot to the foreign ownership laws that may change that - and you may not see such great successes there - but I HAVE seen developments with proposals for "entertainment precincts" and "parks" become paved paradise, where they put up a parking lot. As for objections - my wife is the construction administrator for the largest residential builder in Queensland. i know a lot of objections are bullshit. Hell, I read every single objection lodged to the VRTP carpark proposal, and laughed my ass off at a lot of them - however buried within them were grains of truth, people who cited town planning rules \ guidelines and restrictions, and raised (some) legitimate concerns. The local council member when he announced the official refusal by council was very careful to say that during the litigation that inevitably follows - that VRTP will have the opportunity to counter the concerns raised (and they'll likely win, but not without a fight). But some concerns are fatal. If this mob were to raise the entire site to be above flood level - what does that do to the surrounding areas that are lower? where does the water go - someone elses BackYard - which is a genuine NIMBY concern. I fucking hate NIMBY reactions, but some are legitimate and justified. If council simply ignores objections, why then are VRTP taking them to court over their carpark? I would be very interested to hear of how many chinese led recreational \ entertainment \ theme park developments there are on the coast at the moment...?
  20. buys land to build 'theme park' makes half arsed attempt at theme park that nobody likes residents, enthusiasts, et al, all lodge objections etc. proposal denied by regulatory authorities makes alternative proposal which cashes in on land value - ie: industrial zone or residential estate ... profit. @locke - you do seem to be very firmly in the Songcheng camp here - any conflict of interest? I'm with Slick here - when they break ground on an approved DA for a theme park, then i'll get excited.
  21. *facepalm* I can't believe I didn't make that connection. Stupendous @docoaster, well done and kudos to you!
  22. I got that vibe too @Reanimated35, although I took your 'we sat elsewhere' as advice to others who may prefer to be in the centre of the action.
  23. Am I the only one reading it as 'just want the best tits'?
  24. Small lavalier (lapel) style microphone (it just has a very large wind cover\shield\screen\poffle). Probably all they have to work with their equipment - but when you have two people talking, they have to share it, so that would be why he's holding it - she moves away a couple times and you can see him move closer to her throughout to keep the levels right. If they plan to do more things like this in the future, it probably wouldn't hurt them to invest in a handheld wireless microphone. Love that they're doing this, albeit late by our standards, to keep driving the hype(r) train. My only critique (because I wouldn't be a fan boy without picking something to whinge about) I'd have loved to have them give a bit of a comparison with the lift hill - Greg said over 60 metres \ just higher than batwing - but batwing wasn't in the shot so it was impossible for people to do a good comparison - i'd have loved to have him say either 'twice as high as green lantern' or otherwise 'almost twice as high as those supports you currently see' I do however think it was great that they shot it just as the NIL was being capped off. a few minutes earlier and they might have caught it lifting into position, which would have been cool to see. I wonder which piece will be the last one in?
