I'm no horticultural expert, but I hope we see some greenery that is not the same low maintenance, boring plants we see planted at any new commercial development. I want it to feel like I'm in the jungle.

Me too. The old Rivertown and Gum Tree Gully (at least from the pictures I have seen), felt quite real, and it was covered in trees and other greenery. That kind of theming is what I reckon will happen, seeing as they spent so much on it already, I see no reason to spend a little extra to avoid it looking crappy.

I’d imagine they’re waiting to do that as late as possible so it doesn’t get damaged while moving heavy machinery around the site. Surely a simple guide rail can be installed within a few days?

If its unpowered, i'd say 2 days tops if they take their time. Otherwise if it's powered, 5.

 

Pull it in, line it up, mason drill, bolt, move on.

I understand the sentiment, but the choices you have are:

1. Plant and wait for it to 'grow in' while opening the ride as soon as it is ready (the apparent JR method)
2. Plant and wait for it to 'grow in' and don't open the ride until the true jungle feel is ready (your preferred method but probably a bit of a poor expectation)
3. landscape with fake plants to achieve the desired look on day one (the WOZ method)

 

And before anyone gets uppity about my comments towards WOZ - the movie was all done on soundstages with fake everything. the "fake" landscaping in WOZ's case is preferred because that is true to the film and is a legit option for this style of theme. JR could have gone down that route, but most of the concept and promo material we've been shown has been live, deep planting, so that's what i'm expecting.

4. Have mature plants offsite and plant prior to opening, without the need to grow in.

I didn't forget it, I was ignoring it as an option for the budget conscious. There's been lots of discussion lately about the park doing things to minimise additional \ unnecessary expenses. So I didn't really consider that mature plants would be an option as they tend to cost a lot more to purchase, transport and install.

You can buy them them cheaper when smaller, store them, look after them, let them grow for a few months and then plant when ready.

DW already employ a horticulturalist, it wouldn't be hard for DW to do this on site.

Most of the plants put in so far seem to be ground layer, so significant growth pre-install wouldn't really be too necessary (iirc, they did the same for the small amount of greenery nearby Steel Taipan, and Sea World's recently done the same for their pathway). If/when larger plants come in, I have hope that they'll be planted with enough growth to not be literal saplings upon Rivertown's open.

I get the 3 options, but Greg did promise time and time again this would be the most immersive land built by Dreamworld ever… to me that sets the expectation that you’d be fully immersed in a jungle from day one.

Even their website says “Rivertown is the immersive, jungle-themed precinct“ so I hope they really hit the mark on that and they’re just layering the foliage to begin with.

One would think given the many claims of puffery made by both parks over the years that you'd be managing your expectations a bit better. Given the qualifier 'built by dreamworld ever' the bar isn't set as high as you think. 

I do hope they do more, but i'm not expecting lush tropical jungle on day one.

I can only comment on what i've seen - which has mostly been the corn. if there's also real plants then bully for them - I was describing different methods, it wasn't a slight against Village's chosen theme. Nobody would have expected them to grow real corn all year round...

Wait a few years for the plants to grow then you’ll take this back. 

I have always maintained that rivertown as a theme will look better in 3-4 years time than on opening day. Every park known to man looks barren on day one then the plants grow and provide natural shade. Everything will look better with a bit of weathering.

I think it’s a bit of a silly expectation for an Australian park to install mature plants in a new build area considering how expensive it is to do so.

Look, puffery aside, the use of fake plants isn't a negative and that wasn't the intention of me including it as an option in my post. There are both a time and a place where it's the right choice for the install. 

Nobody wants real ivy crawling all over the wooden rollercoaster, potentially degrading the timber, making it harder to inspect, and also potentially false triggering safety sensors causing shutdowns. There's plenty of real plants in use within Atlantis (and they also weren't all mature and grown in on opening day either).
