When everyone on your page already knows what times the parks open, I guess the only thing left to post about is condiments...

I didn't think it's run anywhere close to 160 in a long long time

Outside of the filming for for coaster wars I don't think it has and don't think it will for a fair while. The ride has a horrible shudder returning to the station after a full speed launch and gets worse after each run.

In other news, WhiteWater West have announced the upcoming Frankston Regional Aquatic Centre is set to debut the world's first AquaSphere. The centre will also open a Constrictor.

It appears this pic shows a render of both the Constrictor and the AquaSphere:

PS check out the video on this page, It shows how they run a computer simulation on how a raft will behave: http://www.whitewaterwest.com/aquasphere.html#!prettyPhoto

How do we know it got up to 160 for filming?

For those of you playing along at home...

These are the scores from Rd1. (S02E01)

Contestants: Superman: Man of Steel, Shambhala, Tatsu, Formula Rossa.

Personally not how I would have rated them based on the video. Having only ridden one of the four I couldn't say for certain though.

How do we know it got up to 160 for filming?

You could feel the difference in speed and the incline to vertical under normal operation didn't feel as forceful as it was during filming. When they strapped the g-force meter do you really think they were going to run it less than full speed?

I have no doubt the actual readings from the "g-force meter" weren't as high as 4.5. If it was running at 160 it'd get a lot closer to the top of the tower. Pause at 1:02 in the first video that T-Bone posted - that's nowhere near 160 surely!

Some of the off ride footage shot (such as the footage looking at the park from upper coomera) was filmed during normal park operation, hence why it is shown operating at normal beight, however all of the on ride footage was shot before the park opened, where in most instances was operating at close to full speed.

Ok, so I haven't watched the full episode yet as it took too long to download, but I did watch the TOT bit (IMO it did not run at full speed during the filming).

Here's the results:

And here is as high as it got in the video

  • 3 weeks later...

Thought it was worth a mention, the Coney Island Astrotower is having a large chunk of the tower removed as its been reported to be swaying more then 18 inches. Check the video on the link. That's some scary swaying going on.

Storm damage combined with the age of the ride?

Apparently when they removed the gondola, motors and even the internal stairwell there was nothing left to really keep it well grounded.

What was the reason for the original closure in 2010?

Not sure where the 2010 closure came from, but the park which operated the ride, Astroland, closed in 2008 and so did the ride. When the Zamperla-owned Luna Park opened on the same site in 2010, it seems they didn't re-open it. As for a reason why it didn't reopen, it might be something as simple as Zamperla only wanted to showcase their own rides in the new park.
