Dreamworld mourns loss of tiger Mohan

ONE of Dreamworld's most famous stalwarts, Mohan the white bengal tiger, has passed away. The Courier-Mail reports Mohan, 17, who came to the Gold Coast theme park's Tiger Island as young cub from the US, passed away yesterday. Known as the "King of Tiger Island", Mohan was one of the original tigers introduced to Dreamworld when Tiger Island opened in 1995. As Mohan paced around his enclosure over the weekend, Tiger Island Manager Patrick Martin-Vegue - who raised him since he was young - said Mohan had been sick for some time. Mr Martin-Vegue said Mohan had been off his food and had suspected renal failure. Mohan was father to Rama, Sita, Sultan and Tai who were born at Tiger Island in 1998. Thousands of visitors to Dreamworld viewed or met Mohan during his 17 years at the park. Dreamworld's Head of Life Sciences Al Mucci said it was a sad day. "Mohan touched so many Australian's who I think became better human beings with respect for him and other creatures," Mr Mucci said. "Our Tiger Island team has been working with Mo since he was a cub and there are many memories they have shared together. He said tigers in the wild can live up to about 12 years. "Mohan was 17 so he has enjoyed a great life here and it was just his time." Mohan will be cremated and his ashes respectfully buried on Tiger Island.
