Vivid Sydney 2018 was launched today & will feature Luna Park for the 1st time.

Vivid Sydney is making the most of the lighting upgrade to The Ferris Wheel but they've added a projection show, The Spirit Of Fun, to Coney Island for good measure.

Luna%20Park%20Vivid%20Sydney%20Render%202018.jpg'The Spirit of Fun' is a grand and moving installation projected on Coney Island, that celebrates Luna Park as a living, interactive artwork, where history, magic, creativity, engineering, fantasy and imagination have come together since 1935 to create millions of memories on this unique and special site. Luna Park is a place where people have always come together, a place that transcends social and cultural barriers, a place that touches people’s souls, is always evolving, and will never be complete. In this dramatic and emotive “son et lumière”, the artworks, characters and ‘soul’ of the Park come to life to tell their story, and to provide a window into the future of fun at this much loved Sydney institution.

Spirit of Fun lights up Luna Park for Vivid Sydney 2018

VividSydney2018-LunaPark-VividSydney-Render-2018-MR.jpg

The home of Sydney’s most famous smile is set to shine even brighter when Luna Park joins Vivid Sydney for the first time in 2018.

A grand light show will take visitors on a ride of a different kind, bringing the park’s characters to life in a dramatic and emotive celebration of the beloved Sydney institution that has been surprising and delighting visitors since 1935.

The Spirit of Fun installation, located on the façade of iconic Coney Island, tells the story of Luna Park’s colourful history and provides a window into the future of fun.

Luna Park’s iconic Ferris Wheel will be lit up for Vivid Sydney for the first time this year, following a refit of more than 3,000 LED lights making it brighter than ever before.

Don’t miss the Silent Sounds, a family friendly silent disco playing the best in singalong and dancefloor classics. The Quiet Riot Neon Boombox Truck in the midway at Luna Park will host resident DJs every night, so grab your headphones, pick your style over three separate audio channels and dance the night away with street performances adorned with special Vivid Sydney lit costumes for a one-of-a-kind experience.

For those looking to dine before or after taking in the fun of the fair, Luna Park’s The Deck Restaurant offers a prime location to view the lights throughout the amusement park and across the harbour to the city.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall said, “Luna Park has been bringing joy to visitors for more than eight decades. It is sure to charm returning and first time visitors alike when it lights up like never before for its Vivid Sydney debut. Luna Park is an ideal spot to view the Vivid Sydney skyline, whether from aboard the magnificent Ferris Wheel or on the ground.”

Vivid Sydney Creative Director, Ignatius Jones said, “Luna Park is a perfect addition to Vivid Sydney. Together the park and the event are about bringing people together and taking them on an adventure. Both create joy, excitement, wonder and lasting memories through championing creativity, engineering and imagination. Our newest precinct is one of Sydney’s oldest friends and the smiles on visitors’ faces may well rival that of the park’s famous entrance when it shines brighter than ever during the festival.”

Luna Park will light up Vivid Sydney from 6pm-10pm Sunday – Thursday, and from 6pm-11pm on Friday and Saturday, from 25 May to 16 June. Entry to Luna Park is free. Ride passes are available for purchase on site or online here.

Here is something extra with Luna Park's participation in Vivid Sydney that wasn't officially announced. I really don't know if this is a good idea (especially the emoji part) as I don't know if the Luna Park face is well-suited for projection mapping of faces? From the Vivid Sydney website's webpage on THE NIGHT. REIMAGINED.:

THE NIGHT. REIMAGINED.

Collaborators: Leo Burnett (Australia) / Imagination (Australia) / Habitat (Australia)

Two iconic installations. One epic experience. Powered by the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.

Your journey to reimagine the night starts on the Sydney Opera House forecourt.

A giant 9, in a spiraling aperture-inspired installation of light and shadows. Visitors will be taken on a unique, sensory journey through the night and beyond powered by the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.

In an immersive walk-through light experience, we’ll be giving a number of Vivid Sydney visitors the opportunity to project their personalised AR Emoji onto the iconic face of Luna Park*.

Move through the journey and discover a super slow-mo experience to capture a truly Instagram-worthy video.

Then, comes your big moment. The chance to turn your selfie into a personalised AR emoji projected on Sydney’s most iconic face — Luna Park.

And once you’re done, step up to the viewing platform for a spectacular view across Vivid Sydney and Luna Park. Capture it all using the low light feature on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

For your chance to take part, visit the Sydney Opera House forecourt.

*Spaces for the AR Emoji projection are limited with high demand expected.

Hi all,

Here are a couple of pics and short videos showing how good Luna Park is looking during the Vivid festival. Please note the new look Arabian inspired Helter Skelter light house. Looks awesome and the parks lighting suite is really coming to the fore!! Well done to LPS and the Vivid organisers for a great spectacle.

I was not a fan. Rather than 3D mapping the face, its just a flat projection surface over the top of the face, really kind of 'meh' and 'why?'.

The fact you actually make it at the Opera House is just beyond stupid also.

Apparently the face was projection mapped, but there are issues because of having to project on to existing features. The really impressive stuff is inside the park though, which is clearly where they’ve decided to spend the money. The projection onto Coney Island is one of the best I’ve ever seen on a building, and I love that they’ve used historic Luna Park imagery, rather than just something random.

I just drove past Luna park on the opposite side of the river and from the motor way the faces projections look very nice and clear. I have not seen them up close yet hopefully I do in the next few days.
