Gold Coast theme parks: Future of Sea World’s monorail revealed

The future of Australia’s last remaining monorail is under a cloud, with reports it is being shut down.

Theme park watchers received a shock this morning after a report on popular Facebook page Gold Coast Theme Parks this morning said Sea World’s monorail was closing after 34 years.

“All references to the attraction have been removed form the parks (sic) website, including on the park map,” the site said.

“The monorail system was Australia’s first, taking millions of guests on the 2km loop around the park.”

But Sea World chief operating officer Bikash Randhawa dismissed the suggestion that Australia’s last monorail was closing as “rubbish”.

“If we were doing anything, you would hear it from us,” he told the Bulletin this morning.

“It’s rubbish and we are focused on other things right now.”

It comes three years after the Broadbeach monorail shut down.

That monorail opened in 1989 and ran between Jupiters Casino and the Oasis Shopping Centre.

It was closed in January 2017 after the day-to-day cost of maintaining the system became too much, as well as Star Entertainment Group’s redevelopment plans.

Sea World closed its doors last month, along with all other theme parks in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

I think it is worth remembering that the monorail was due to be closed for the year due to New Atlantis construction, with that now being delayed further, perhaps they just don't want to advertise an attraction that will not be operating any time soon.

Better wipe the entire website then.

And you don't remove any mention of an attraction existing just because it's closed for an extended period.

So it seems likely that the monorail is closed for good, despite my original comments/post being shut down by VRTP
