Competing With Storm

Recommended Posts

Dreamworlds new attraction is certainly not being pitched as an alternative or competition to "The Storm" at SW.

One is a replacement attraction, the other is a brand new Australian first Ride.

DW is clearly happy/accepting of losing some ground (more ground) to the competition this year, with hopefully a major ride opening late 2014

From everyone I've spoken to, SeaWorld is by far the least popular Gold Coast theme park, and the one that is the worst value for money ($85 is hugely overpriced for Movieworld, but for Seaworld it's just ridiculous). I doubt the addition of Storm will change that perception, so I doubt Dreamworld will be losing much sleep over it.

The issue is the flow on effect - people want to try the storm due to it being new, a first in Australia. They buy a VIP pass (why would u pay $80 to go once, when for $100 u can get 3 parks for a year) which them gives flow on incremental visitation to MW and WnW. Also target markets - for most families with young children, SW is their favourite park on the coast

First of all, since when does anyone really pay $85 to get into a park these days?

Second of all exactly who is 'everyone you speak to' alex_1? Because to get an accurate picture you have to asses all demographics. Sea World is really the only fully rounded park (I'd include Dreamworld but it's so run down it's a joke) that has offerings to fill a full day even when not busy.

So I really don't think the entry price to Sea World is "just ridiculous"

Sure, I'd mostly mention kids my age. But I've spoken to a fair few parents who have younger children and so far I've got the picture that SeaWorld is more of a "once off" kind of park while they visit Dreamworld regularly. Dreamworld may seem a bit run down to us, but most people do enjoy it for the huge range of attractions it has.

I may be wrong, I'd have to see the visitor numbers for both parks to know. But as far as I know, SeaWorld is less than popular. Also, even if SeaWorld was one of the best parks in the world, $85 admission is a joke.

You know it's quite possible this is simply the next impermanent replacement for Dino Island, and not a permanent thing. Might only be there till they can find other homes for all these animals.

Huh?? Have u got threads mixed up? In guessing you are referring to 'Wild' as opposed to 'The Storm'??? Do you understand how much money it costs to set up animal enclosures, especially those required for gorillas and hippo's?? Not to mention the cost of the animals themselves & their upkeep, specialist handlers and carers. We're likely talking over a million dollars +. There is NO WAY it is a temporary attraction.

These figures are back from 2007, all the theme parks are pretty close in terms of attendance.
Sea World is hardly the least popular.
Dreamworld 1,368,141 -1.3%
Sea World 1,351,800 +6.9%
Warner Bros. MovieWorld 1,323,542 +5.8%
Wet ‘N’ Wild 1,024,730 +18.8%
Australian Outback Spectacular 312,948
WhiteWater World 247,360
I can't seem to find any newer attendance figures, but only growth figures.
In 2012 Ardent Leisure had a 21.8% fall in visitors,
compared to Sea World which a 28.1% increase and Movie World which had a 27.3% increase.
My guess is that Sea World is most visited Gold Coast Park, but I can't say that for sure.

Yes I'm sorry I am privy to such numbers and Sea World is certainly not unpopular. And what do you mean that even if it was one of the best in the world $85 would be a joke. This is what is wrong with this country. Everyone undervalues everything so much. Then winged because we don't build $25 million coasters.

Parent with young kids right here, Sea World is definitely the favourite, although we do go less frequently being further away. We're more likely to go there if we're staying down the coast for a few days.

I probably like Movie World the best, as would my husband.

We've had the VIP passes for a number of years, and going to try out Dreamworld for a change, as the older child (turning 5), is getting a bit over the kids rides at MW, having been going on them since she was a toddler (with the exception of Road Runner Coaster, that's still a favourite).

Liz.... trust me - you don't want to do that.... if you want to go Dreamworld, I can't stop you - but only get a 1 year pass....

as the uncle of an 8, 4 and 2 year old (who only go to theme parks with us), I promise you I know what i'm talking about... You will be disappointed, and they will very quickly tire of DW's offering. Dreamworld is ok to have in addition to VRTP, but not an alternative in all reality...

Completely disagree Whilst I prefer VRTPs, I have 12 nieces & nephews from 14 to 4 with annuals to all parks on the coast - and DW/WWW is where you'll find them most weekends. U cannot compare kids offerings at DW compared to the other parks, with Dreamworks experience, tigers, wildlife park. It's the one thing DW has over MW
