Village Roadshow to open “one of the world’s best” theme park attractions on the Coast

Village Roadshow says the Gold Coast is about to get “one of the world’s best” theme park

Village Roadshow says the Gold Coast is about to get “one of the world’s best” theme park attractions.

VILLAGE Roadshow is about to launch a new Gold Coast theme park attraction it boasts will be “one of the world’s best”.

Village Roadshow co-chairman Robert Kirby said the new attraction would allow the group to maintain its position as the “premier theme park operator”.

“We continue to invest in our theme parks, constantly refreshing our special events and attractions to ensure we maintain our premium position and give people a new reason to visit,”

Mr Kirby told shareholders at the groups annual meeting yesterday.

“In the coming months, we will be announcing an exciting new attraction for the Gold Coast which we expect will be one of the world’s best theme park drawcards.”

Village, owner of Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild, said attendances are up at its Gold Coast theme parks, with FY16 first quarter admissions higher than the same time last year.

Mr Kirby said a new membership program and existing annual pass program saw solid sales in the first quarter.

The opening of Sea World’s new Creatures of the Deep exhibit and Nickelodeon Land children’s area has been well received and Sea World’s new conference centre is exceeding expectations.

Village is also committed to boosting its presence in Asia, last week entering into a memorandum of understanding to open a Wet`n’Wild in Hainan, China in late 2016 in conjunction with partner CITIC.

The first theme park project is likely to be a Hollywood branded Movie Park in Chengdu.

VRL is also in discussions with developers in Asia to roll out indoor theme parks, called Big Boxes, in major shopping centres.

James Bond and Han Solo also have Village Roadshow expecting a bumper 2016.

The group’s Australian cinema business is outperforming expectations so far this financial year, with admissions up and moviegoers spending more at the flicks.

Mr Kirby says business had been “outstanding” for the new James Bond blockbuster Spectre, with the much-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens due for release in December.

Next year’s line-up also looks strong, with Batman vs Superman, Captain America, and Finding Dory, the sequel to the hit animated flick Finding Nemo, due to hit screens.

“We are anticipating a strong 2016 financial year in cinema exhibition,” he said.

Village Roadshow recorded its best cinema sales ever last year, helped by the success of the Imitation Game, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Jurassic World.

Premium movie-going experiences including Gold Class and Vmax, as well as more candy bar options, such as hot food, have helped draw in bigger audiences.

But while the company’s cinema business is firing, its film distribution arm, Roadshow, has had a disappointing first quarter. Roadshow’s full year result is likely to be below that of 2014/15 because of the ongoing decline in the DVD market.

To help offset that, Village is enhancing its digital options by entering into agreements with streaming services Netflix, Stan and Presto. VRL shares closed 1¢ lower at $7.21.

I just realised I made a big assumption that it would be movie world (based on the image at the top) but it could be any VRTP park so it does open some possibilities.

Without putting down Adventure World's efforts - MI2\Kraken was a worlds biggest \ tallest \ longest... And I think it's a fantastic addition, but to the general public, it is still "just a waterslide". Before I continue I just want to make a point of saying that I am in no way saying AW was bad for marketing it this way, or picking it over another blockbuster attraction - after Abyss it was a great followup - especially one year on - but it is still "just a waterslide"...

Movie World is overdue for something extreme. Sea World is sorely lacking in the thrills area, plus it has lost it's train, it's cable car, and most of it's monorail, in addition to it's iconic and recognisable coaster, although Storm is more recent than Green Lantern, so purely from a calendar perspective, MW should be first in line.... Wet N Wild, in my opinion, isn't lacking or needing anything except general touch ups and improvements.

I think they could probably do much more with the space they have at Movie World to absolutely blow people's minds than anything they could do at Sea World... but I would like to see SW's offering improved also.

If DjRappa himself is blown away by it, then i'm going to assume it's going to be something extraordinary. Village Roadshow have proven in the past that they can produce world class attractions (Superman, Scooby Doo and Wild West Falls and even Bermuda Triangle in the past). I would also trust him as a source, and I will honestly say I am very excited to see just what they do. The park's in general in Australia right now are going the right way for improvements, even with a few things being taken out I'm fairly sure the parks all have a grand scheme for the next few years and it will be interesting to see what happens.

I know you couldn't say what it is for obvious reasons, but are you able to at least tell us if they have an ETA on when they might be making the announcement at least, provided of course you have that information and it's not going to cause you issues in your workplace.

^^Not a fan, to be honest, and I stress that is a personal preference. They make fun coasters, but I prefer the ejector air and intensity of RMC and Intamin. Beemer hypers are more floater air and they haven't built a super intense looper of any variety for years (intense ones: Nemesis, Katun, Montu, Kumba, and a few others) IMO. I only qualify my answer as personal preference, I've been on 62 B & Ms, so I've got a good sample to base my preference on.

Certainly DJrappa has built up some anticipation, and as observed by others MW can build something amazing when they want to.

I know and wish I could say but this one is a very tight lipped secret and my source is very official but has to be protected.

I was shocked and blown away myself and I know you all will be too. Exciting times.

B&M confirmed

The term 'world's best' really doesn't mean anything much at all, anything could be classified as 'world's best' with some crappy justification... However for me, a 'world's best' would have to be something that is better than SE, so I expect something huge.

I thought you might have said that due to some more logistical reasons (ie budget), but nevertheless it's quite interesting to see your stance.

I've only been on one B&M, that being Hollywood Dream at Universal Studios Japan, and I can't say I was overwhelmed. I much prefer ejector air towards floater, so I'm almost inclined to say I agree, even with my limited experience
