So just did a formal school drop off tonight at MovieWorld, joker head is missing heaps of LED lighting plus flickering, also I thought they were painting the rest of the coaster? Lift hill, drop and first air time hill is still untouched but the ride is operational. 

Can second this. Went by on the bus earlier this week and saw Rivals testing the whole time we were stuck in the carpark. Checking the maintenance schedule it seems Superman Escape has shit the bed again and is now closed, hence why they tried to get Rivals reopen sooner.

The Flash was meant to reopen tomorrow; but it’s been pushed back by a week. So school holidays starting and Superman, Flash, WWF and Scooby are closed.

Superman will be the next on the chopping block, nearly all hydraulic launches are disappearing. They were testing green lantern until 7 tonight when I left the formal. Not once did I see Flight of the wicked witch in operation from 430-5

I hear that's intentional 🙄 evidently it hasn't worked out as planned

Maybe they were never intending to replace the bulbs or finish repainting the track this year, but it is a shame too see when it’s closed for so long and they went to all that effort to remove the joker head.

You don't pull it down without the intention to fix it.  I don't know what happened but you don't install it again before it's fixed.  Sometimes MW makes me question, do they really give a f$%k anymore.

@New display name someone had shared some close up photos of the framing having rusting, so I’m thinking they removed it purely to do some repairs on the structure.

But yes, why they didn’t go and get new bulbs to replace the few hundred that aren’t working baffles me. There’s a Bunnings within a 5 minute drive from the park, it can’t be that hard (I know the bulbs might not be standard, etc etc)!

That Joker head is not made of ‘bulbs’, just the same as Green Lantern. 
 

It’s essentially a big custom shaped LED Screen (think concerts or stadiums) made of millions of tiny high powered LEDs which are prone to failure over time. You can’t just replace a few on something like this. 
 

FWIW I drove past last night and it looked totally fine at night which is it’s intention at the end of the day. 
 

Of all the low hanging fruit I’ll leave this one on the tree. 

@rappa I’m not expert in this area, but looking at this close up photo from @Theme Park Girl to me they look like individual bulbs (but if I’m wrong, good to know they are actually LEDs).

 

Yes so what you see there is an LED chip (the rectangle part) and then a lens in front (the dome portion). 
 

The Joker head is a bit more simplistic than GL because they are higher powered, spaced apart chips, theoretically can be changed out, but tricky and specialized. 
 

GL is more like a traditional LED wall, made up individual cabinets, with smaller bare chips located within ‘shaders’ that keep the sun off and make them brighter in the daylight. 
- fun fact, the GL logo would be capable of displaying full video content (albeit only green) but at the time of it’s install it was not desired to implement that capability.

Yeah it's not like screwing in a new lightbulb \ lamp into an edison mount - but it is repairable.

 

I figure you could technically just replace the broken ones - but it's circuit board level repairs - like replacing a processing chip on a motherboard x 100 and not worth the labour compared to just replacing the entire board when it's time to do so.

Maybe they skimped out on the LED when the head was on the ground and the weather has already destroyed it 

Each one of those "bulbs" are a 3 in 1 SMD. Both displays are custom Vuepix LED screens developed for ULA. The joker head is a custom GM series LED screen. It's still made up of a bunch of modules that connect together, but it was designed with greater LED pitch as it's purely signage, there's no infill panel it's completely open.

Obviously more a bespoke design/shape, but they had a lot of problems with the GL panels over the years too, including water damage. Even if you don't lose a panel, you can lose a signal or power module that will take out an entire group and you're just left with a big portion of your sign missing. Wanted to get away from these sorts of issues. 

Not sure if cost comes into it a lot when you are building a custom 130sqm sign. Thats coverage about half the size of an average house. When you think of it that way, it starts to really drive home how large the sign is.

Movie World has reopened the area around WWF despite the ride still being closed. Here’s what the new fence looks like up close. 

I noticed they’ve cut down a bunch of trees around the ride meaning you can now easily see into the back of house maintenance areas.

It was taken at eye-level, a few meters back.

Theme park giant Village Roadshow is eyeing off a new Gold Coast attraction as it prepares to unveil new rides and the return of old favourites.

The company, which owns Sea World, Wet’n’Wild and Warner Bros Movie World, is investing heavily ahead of the summer holidays season when it hopes to have at least two big new drawcards for visitors.

The first will be the Zoom Zone, a 17.6m, tall four-slide aquatic attraction at Wet’n’Wild while Movie World’s Scooby Doo Spooky Castle roller coaster will reopen after a long-running revamp.

Village Roadshow CEO Clark Kirby said work was ramping up to make sure both attractions would be ready for the summer.

“Construction is well underway for the Zoom Zone slide precinct which will open this summer at Wet’n’Wild,” he said.

“The new Zoom Zone tower will bring four new body slides to Australia’s premier water park just in time for the peak summer period and we are incredibly excited to bring these new slides to the park, with each having differing thrill levels to provide an experience for all our guests.

“We are incredibly excited to share Movie World’s fan-favourite Scooby Doo: Spooky Coaster ride will be returning towards the end of the year after a multimillion-dollar refurbishment.

“It is incredible to see the love our theme park visitors around Australia have for this iconic attraction and we can’t wait to reintroduce it to a new generation of visitors upon its reopening later this year.”

Mr Kirby said attention was also turning to the future, including new attractions and construction of an already approved high-rise hotel at Movie World.

The $300m, 22-storey, 600-room accommodation complex is earmarked for a 5.1ha site on the northern side of Warner Bros Movie World on Entertainment Drive and was first proposed a decade ago.

The new tower will feature a “panoramic sky deck”, infinity pool, bar and restaurants on its 21st level, along with a three-hall function centre.

Village Roadshow spruiked the project as creating 799 new construction jobs during its two-year construction, with a further 400 full-time jobs during its first five years of opening.

Mr Kirby said the final design was still being developed, while the company was preparing to announce another attraction for the park.

“We are continuing our planning processes for a hotel at Movie World, with the focus currently on right-sizing the project to get a better understanding of budgets with current construction costs,” he said.

“We are constantly looking towards future projects which will complement our existing line-up of rides, attractions and experiences, and we look forward to sharing some details around a new entertainment offering coming to Warner Bros. Movie World in the coming months.

“We are also looking at a number of nature-based tourism opportunities such as additional Eco Tents at Paradise Country Farmstay, along with a number of other initiatives in this space.”
